There are two categories of assignments; Prep and Practice and Body of Evidence.
Prep and Practice assignments (homework, classwork, quizzes, etc.) give students the opportunity to learn the material and get feedback without penalty. Scores do not count toward the final grade of a standard. Instead, scores communicate progress and show readiness for success on Body of Evidence assignments.
These assignments are scored on a scale of
0 (missing) - .5 (incomplete) - 1 (complete).
Students are required to demonstrate proficiency of course standards through their work. A Body of Evidence assignment (paper, test, project, etc.) is an opportunity to provide such evidence and counts towards the final grade on that standard(s). All of the evidence scored for each standard is averaged together to calculate a final score. Generally, these standards will be assessed bi-weekly with a rubric upon the completion of a product and will use ELA learning progressions for scoring.
Your success in a course is directly related to your ability to be a responsible and respectful member of our class as well as your ability to persevere when faced with challenges. For this reason, we want to communicate with you what we see as your level of proficiency for Habits of Work as it pertains to respect, responsibility, and perseverance. Our hope is this information will help you grow as a student and a member of our community. While this will be represented using our standard 1-4 scale, this score will not calculate into your course grade.
When your categories are standards:
Your score for this class will be based on our standards.
Overall course grades will only be posted during the last week of each marking period. However, you may always check the “Mastery” tab to see your current average score for each standard and then calculate your overall grade.
Towards the end of each marking period, I will review all of the evidence and then use my professional judgment to determine your final score for each standard.
It is important to remember that proficiency develops over time and we embrace a growth mindset. This document will discuss how this course embraces try again or multiple opportunities to demonstrate proficiency and how this is reflected through professional judgment.
The score that you see for “Body of Evidence” when you look at grades is not your current course grade. However, this gives you a ballpark average for each assignment but does not calculate towards your final course grade.
