In English, we read stories that reflect our world. The world is vast and ever-changing. Therefore, we will discuss subject matter regarding and name examples of how race and racism, gender identity, socioeconomic status, sexuality, and discrimination shape stories.
By reading about experiences different than our own, texts are "windows" that can inform our perspective. Reading texts that "mirror" our experiences can validate our feelings, and remind us that our voices are powerful. Watch Rudine Sims Bishop speak about this here.
No one will ever be forced to read or share anything they feel unsafe doing so.
I am annually trained as a Safe Zone Ally, which means I can help support and connect you with resources to address obstacles you may face that interfere with your academic success and social well-being at school, as it relates to issues surrounding sexual orientation/gender identity. My goal is to help you be successful and to maintain a safe and equitable school experience.
