W6CX-DV -- Registering your Callsign for D-STAR
Most people using D-STAR will want to register their callsign and set up at least one "terminal". This will allow them to talk to hams on other repeaters or DPlus reflectors (named REFxxxxx). Full info on registration is found at:
http://www.dstargateway.org/D-Star_Registration.html. The essentials are shown below.
But first -- if you possibly registered your callsign in the past but have forgotten which gateway you used, go to https://dstar.info/query.html and check if your callsign is already registered. If so and you created a terminal, you are ready to use D-STAR and can skip the rest of this page.
New Callsign Registration is a two-step process.
First Step – get an account on a D-STAR gateway
We recommend you go to https://regist.dstargateway.org/Dstar.do and click on the Register button. Enter your callsign in UPPER CASE along with other requested information and a password of your choice. This will submit your request for approval. You will receive a confirmation email once your request for an account is approved.
Second Step – Create a “terminal”
Once your account is approved, go back to the above Registration page and under "Already Registered?", enter your callsign (UPPER CASE) and password and click Login. Then click on the Personal Information tab (upper right of main page). Each numbered line can be used to set up a terminal. For your first terminal:
• Click on the check-box on the left of the first line
• Enter a blank (press the space bar) in the Initial box. This is important. Don't skip over this field. Just enter an explicit space into this box.
• Do NOT click on the RPT box.
• Enter your callsign in the pcname box.
Everyone should have at least one terminal with "initial" box of space. When done, click the Update button.
After you’ve entered your terminal, it sometimes takes several hours for the updates to propagate through the D-STAR network. You can check at https://dstar.info/query.html.
Final Step
Be sure to enter your registered callsign into your radio's MY or MYCALL field. You must do this before that radio will be able to talk to others on reflectors or connected repeaters. For nearly everyone, you only need one terminal, even if you have more than one D-STAR radio. Just use the same registered callsign in MY/MYCALL on all your radios.

Subject: [w6cx-dstar] How D-Star users can talk to hams via the reflector
To: <W6CX-DigitalVoice@groups.io>, <w6cx-dstar@groups.io>, <MDARC@groups.io>
This note provides guidance so D-Star users of the MDARC W6CX-DV repeater (145.0 +2.5) will be able to talk to hams on linked reflectors. Our default reflector is REF014C. Without doing the following, you may hear people via the reflector, but they will not hear you.
For those new to D-Star, or who haven't used it for a while, there are important things you need to do if you want to talk to people on reflectors, not just those within RF range of Mt Diablo:
1. Register your callsign at an ICOM registration gateway. We recommend you go to the REGIST system at https://regist.dstargateway.org . Details can be found at https://www.mdarc.org/repeater-systems/digital-voice/d-star/d-star-registration .
2. Be sure to put your registered callsign into your D-Star radio's MYCALL field.
3. When you program your radio to access our DV repeater, be sure the RPT2 field is set to W6CX...G (where the 3 dots are spaces). You can check by going to your radio's Menu and selecting Callsigns. Here's what you should see:
UR: CQCQCQ
R1: W6CX C (3 spaces so C is in 8th position)
R2: W6CX G (3 spaces so G is in 8th position)
MY: <your callsign> as registered, ideally with no trailing "initial"
If you use DR Mode, check out slide 13 at
https://modigitalgroup.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/DStar-Demystified-20230709.pdf . In fact, all the slides have useful information for D-Star users.
But when you get that new D-Star radio, be sure to do the above 3 steps so others on the networked reflector will be able to hear you.
