The Amazon rain forest is in Brazil and it covers two-thirds of the country. The rain forest is almost the size of the United States when compared to each other. The Amazon, and really any other forest, act as a "carbon sink", meaning it soaks up the carbon dioxide and prevents it from being released into the atmosphere. If a lot of carbon is released into the atmosphere then it would contribute to or speed up climate change. Deforestation can happen quickly by fires or clear-cutting the trees. Deforestation doesn't just occur in the Brazilian Amazon, it happens all over the world and sometimes deforestation goes down in some countries but remains dangerously high in others.
For years scientists and researchers have been warning us that deforestation and drought can lead to the Amazon absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and "help offset emissions from fossil-fuel burning." An article that National Geographic has written on deforestation states, "Recent studies have even suggested that some portions of the tropical landscape already may release more carbon than they store." By deforestation, the Amazon is responsible for a lot of the greenhouse gas in the world, which greatly contributes to global warming. By stopping deforestation, and many other factors that affect global warming would bring balance back and the damage could be reversed. Society can start contributing by donating money to plant more trees or even do it themselves. People need to stop cutting down the trees in the Amazon because it is greatly affecting global warming and that will be detrimental to society and the world.
