ENGLISH 9

A required course for 9th graders. Parts of speech, sentence structure, and capitalization, as well as writing are emphasized in the grammar part of the course. The literature section is designed to acquaint students with the necessary literary terms needed to discuss literature. The student will write a variety of essay forms.  


ENGLISH 10

A required class for tenth graders. The literature section deals primarily with selections from Language of Literature, 10. Additional paperbacks are required. Reading is organized both thematically and culturally.  Students will be expected to analyze several types of literature and write comparative and critical analysis essays. Students will continue to show improvement in language, vocabulary, and the basics of grammar. A research paper is required. 


ENGLISH 11

This class involves a survey of American literature from the 16th Century to the 20th Century.  Writing proficiency is also emphasized.  Students will use literature models to write persuasive and expository essays. Students will be routinely tested on objective knowledge of literary movements and authors.  


AP ENGLISH LITERATURE:    

This senior course is intended to prepare students to pass the Advanced Placement exam at the end of the year.  The AP English class is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature.  Through the close analysis of selected texts, students will deepen their understanding of the ways writers use language to provide both meaning and pleasure for their readers.  As they read, students will consider a work’s structure, style, and themes, as well as smaller-scale elements such as the use of figurative language, imagery, symbolism, and tone. Text:  Language of Literature:  British Literature, (HMC), and various paperbacks and non-fiction. Prerequisite:  Teacher recommendation and a “B” or better in AP English Language or “A” in American Literature.  The Honors student will have exhibited higher level literary comprehension and writing skills as well as consistent class work.  The AP English Student also must be prepared to complete a summer reading list, a test the first day of class, and numerous outside reading projects.  AP test is required for this course.


ENGLISH 12:  

This senior course is designed to improve the student’s skills in critical reading, writing, and thinking.  Students will be expected to read daily from assigned works of Ancient, World, and British literature and from texts on writing.  Writing assignments will require students to think analytically and to write well supported essays.   Vocabulary and review of English grammar and usage will be addressed.  Students will learn the research process, develop a professional portfolio, participate in job shadowing, and work on a Senior Project.  English skills will be reviewed as needed.  Improved proficiency in the mechanical and structural aspects of writing will be achieved through review and practice with a focus on academic research and writing.  


BUSINESS COMMUNICATION & LITERACY:

This senior level course is designed to prepare students for successful entry to the workforce or higher education.  Students will focus on written and oral communication, using technology and real-world examples. Emphasis is placed on professional aptitudes and attitudes.  Students will learn about communicating in a professional environment.  Written, oral, and nonverbal communication skills will be learned.  Students will practice active listening and appropriate communicating using technology. Prerequisite is Basic Business Tech.
