We are here to support you as you raise your children into emotionally healthy and happy adult. According to Erik Erikson's Theory of psycho-social development, elementary-aged children need to advance through two stages:

Purpose: Initiative vs. Guilt (early childhood, ages 4-5)

Children in this stage are trying to master the world around them. They are learning how to zip their clothes and tie their shoes. They are learning academic skills like counting and reading. These skills help them move toward independence. Adults should encourage children's pursuit of independence.

Competence: Industry vs. Inferiority (middle children, ages 4-12)

Children in this stage are trying to master trust in their abilities to achieve. They are becoming aware of themselves as individuals and are working at being responsible for their own learning. They are motivated learners who want the approval and recognition of their parents, teachers and peers for their accomplishments. If children in this stage are not allowed to develop confidence in their own talents and abilities, they will become unmotivated and develop a low self-concept.
We want each child to move through these stages successfully so that they are ready for their next developmental stage in middle school: Identity vs. Role Confusion
Please remember that developmental theory is not a linear process as each child is an individual and may master these skills on their own time. If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact us.
