What are the requirements for a Wheaton Internship?
A completed application (opens May 1st, 2026), Ms. Gustin is located in room 1201 if you have questions about the application process. Review this Steps to an Internship Flyer for more information. If you are using the internship for a workplace you already work at, you would need to complete the paperwork below and return to Ms. Gustin prior to the deadline. Internships can be paid or unpaid and they should align with the student’s future career interests. To express an interest now and be placed on the summer mailing list, please complete the Interest Form (Sign Up for 2026-2027 will open May 1st, 2026). Please review the WBL Opportunities Page for more information about how to look for an Internship.
Some other considerations are listed below as you consider applying for an Internship.
Students must provide their own transportation.
Students must complete assignments in the online learning platform and assignments that are distributed via Canvas.
Students will turn in a timesheet, validated by a supervisor, with the hours they worked the timesheet period.
Students must work a minimum of 12-15 hours per week for a triple period internship, 8-10 hours per week for a double period and five hours per week for a single period. Students will receive ½ credit for each release period each semester. Students do not receive academic credit for travel periods.
Before students separate from an internship site, it MUST be discussed with Ms. Gustin before notifying the employer or host site. The expectation is that you will maintain an internship the entire time you are enrolled in the program. Leaving an internship site early (or securing one too late) will adversely affect your grade.
You are expected to leave the building after your last class.
Total Hours Required: minimum 75 hours/semester = 0.5 credit, 150 hours/semester = 1.0 credit, 225 hours/semester = 1.5 credit
Because I don’t see you daily in a classroom, you will be expected to communicate with me if issues arise. We will be using your MCPS gmail account and Canvas as it will be a primary form of communication between us. You are responsible for checking your MCPS Gmail and Canvas accounts.
Disclaimer: Participation in extracurricular activities is difficult to do while participating in Internship. It takes a highly motivated student. Please make sure you will have the time to devote the minimum hourly requirement each week to your internship site in addition to other activities or obligations you may have.
What is expected of you during your Internship?
At an internship you are not just representing yourself, rather you are representing Wheaton.
As a Knight we expect you to:
Display a positive and respectful attitude
Work with honesty and integrity
Represent the organization in a responsible manner
Perform their internship to a reasonable, acceptable standard
Maintain good attendance and be ON TIME
Conduct themselves in a professional manner, even when off duty
Follow set policies and procedures when dealing with problems or issues
What is a Workshop and When are they held?
Along with the internship itself, the course requires attending workshops. These will be held either in person or asynchronously. These workshops are to help support your growth and development as an intern/employee. Workshop objectives will be posted on Canvas, to be completed and submitted either in person or through Canvas, and may count as a All Task or Participation assessment. A more detailed schedule will be shared with Internship participants during the first week of school.
