Students can leave the building, but should be engaged in related instruction (studying for a technical class, practicing a skill) in order to earn those credits.
Grades for apprenticeship students are based on the electronic portfolio which includes assignments for related instruction given when they were not with an employer, evaluations from the employer and assessments from related instruction. You may view the MCPS Apprenticeship page as this will also have information regarding Apprenticeships within MCPS.

Along with Internship opportunities, Wheaton also offers Apprenticeship opportunities. These opportunities allow you to be paid, work on obtaining a license to work in the state of Maryland, and allow you to graduate from high school with a workable trade in order to pursue more opportunities upon graduation.
For example, the IECC Electrical Apprenticeship program will allow you to learn and work during the school day, earn a wage and then graduate with the skills needed to test and obtain a Electrical Journeyman License in the state of Maryland. From there, you can obtain work and possibly continue to pursue an education in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
Application period for 2026-2027 is currently closed. Applications for 2027-2028 will open in January 2027.
