The Middle Years Program (MYP) is one branch of International Baccalaureate (IB). All students at Springbrook High School are in this program for 9th and 10th grade as part of our IB World School. MYP is a teaching and learning philosophy with a foundation in the application of learning to the real world. Students work on skills known as approaches to learning skills (ATL) designed to help them grow as international learners. Concepts which are embedded in classes foster an interdisciplinary understanding and focus student attention on the connections between individual objectives. Students can explore how the learning relates to the world through the global contexts. In 10th grade, students will complete a Personal Project in which they select a research topic of their choice to investigate and produce a product that will help benefit the greater Springbrook community
Teaching and learning in the MYP is underpinned by the following core components:
Approaches to learning (ATL), helping students learn how to learn by developing skills for research, critical and creative thinking, communication, collaboration, and self management
Key and related concepts, helping students explore big ideas that matter.
Global contexts, helping students understand the relevance and importance of their study for understanding their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet.
Service as Action through Community Service, helping students develop as caring members of our community
Personal Project, helping students in grade 10 construct in-depth knowledge on a topic of their choice

The Regional International Baccalaureate Diploma Program at Springbrook High School is an application based program for students who meet specific academic requirements and are interested in pursuing a rigorous pre-university course of studies. Students participate in a special cohort working on IB Middle Years Program during 9th and 10th grade, which accelerates and enriches the curriculum to prepare students for the IB Diploma program in 11th and 12th grade. Admission to the Springbrook High School Regional IB Program is very competitive. Criteria used to evaluate candidates include teacher recommendations, written statements from candidates, previous grades, coursework, and test scores. In addition to academic rigor, the program offers students the opportunity to explore multiple perspectives on global issues and to examine their own roles as lifelong learners and contributors to the world around them.
The application for the Regional IB Program at Springbrook is completed through MCPS's central office for special programs. The application opens on October 1, 2022 and is due by November 5, 2022. For more information or for application materials, please CLICK HERE and select the GRADE 8 tab.
