MCPS Guidelines for Extracurricular Activities for the 2025-2026 School Year are coming soon.
The SCMS Husky Jazz Band is a school-sponsored extracurricular activity.
We are still taking new members!
Members of the Husky Jazz Band will be responsible for attending at least one after school rehearsal per week, practicing their music outside of rehearsal, and performing at scheduled concerts.
How do I join the Husky Jazz Band?
Students enrolled in a music class at SCMS (band, orchestra, or choir) are invited to join jazz band by simply attending the first rehearsal.
Students who are not enrolled in a music class at SCMS must schedule an audition with Ms. Saund before the first rehearsal. Send Ms. Saund an e-mail at Preetcharn_K_Saund2@mcpsmd.org to schedule your audition before school, after school, or at lunch. Audition will include: performance of 16 measures of the piece of your choice and sight-reading 16 measures of a standard jazz piece chosen by Ms. Saund with one minute of prep.
The focus of the Husky Jazz Band is to have a traditional jazz band experience. If you are interested in learning a new instrument or how to read music, please sign up for a music class as one of your electives!
Standard instrumentation for Jazz Band:
5 saxophones (2 alto, 2 tenor, 1 baritone)
4 trombones
4 trumpets
piano
guitar
bass (upright or electric)
drum set/auxiliary percussion
Note: Other instruments are welcome in the Husky Jazz Band with Ms. Saund's approval. However, it is important that the band mostly follows the guidelines of standard instrumentation.
