All MCPS elementary school students will be receiving reading instruction using the program Benchmark Advance by Benchmark Education Company, LLC.
Benchmark Advance is a comprehensive core literacy program for students in Grades Pre-K‒5 and is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The curriculum offers rigorous integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction to meet the needs of all students. Benchmark Advance supports students in mastering rigorous learning goals with strong resources for differentiated instruction and responsive teaching based on ongoing assessments.

It is really important to pronounce letter sounds correctly. Watch this video on the right to see the significance of proper pronunciation.
These are 44 common sight words that your child will need to know by heart at the end of kindergarten. Feel free to practice these kindergarten sight words at home. Be sure your child can read these words in texts and in isolation. If your child can recognize these sight words, have your child practice writing them using their best handwriting!
