Reading

All MCPS elementary school students will be receiving reading instruction using the program Benchmark Advance by Benchmark Education Company, LLC.

Benchmark Advance is a comprehensive core literacy program for students in Grades Pre-K‒5 and is aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The curriculum offers rigorous integrated reading, writing, speaking, and listening instruction to meet the needs of all students. Benchmark Advance supports students in mastering rigorous learning goals with strong resources for differentiated instruction and responsive teaching based on ongoing assessments.

MCPS students will be able to log into their own Benchmark Universe account to access eBooks their teacher will assign them!

*Note: No need to login until your kindergarten teacher introduces it to you!

MCPS Kindergarten Sight Words

These are 44 common sight words that your child will need to know by heart at the end of kindergarten. Feel free to practice these kindergarten sight words at home. Be sure your child can read these words in texts and in isolation. If your child can recognize these sight words, have your child practice writing them using their best handwriting!

Quarter 4: Living Things: plants and animals and their needs

Kindergarten Social Studies Curriculum

We will learn about rules at home and school, history and culture: holidays and celebrations, and economics: meeting needs and wants. Social Studies will also be integrated into our reading curriculum.
