Second Grade

Marking Quarter 1:

  • Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade students have a new curriculum starting this year. This quarter, second grade students will be going through the performing and responding processes for some select songs. These processes will facilitate learning the following concepts:
      • Rhythm reading: half note, half rest, tied quarter notes, dotted half note
      • Meter: strong beat, weak beat
      • Form: Question and Answer, Rondo
      • Piano/forte dynamics
      • Allegro/lento tempo
      • Families of the Orchestra

Marking Quarter 2:

  • In quarter 2, second grade students will be going through the creating and performing processes for some select songs. These processes will facilitate learning the following concepts:
      • Pitch reading: Do, Re, pentatonic
      • Rhythm reading: half note, half rest, tied quarter notes, dotted half note
      • Meter: simple vs. compound
      • Form: Question and Answer, Rondo
      • Bordun/drone accompaniment
      • Singing with proper breath and support

Marking Quarter 3:

  • In quarter 3, second grade students will be going through the performing and responding processes for some select songs. These processes will facilitate learning the following concepts:
      • Pitch reading: Do, Re, pentatonic
      • Pitch notating: Do
      • Rhythm reading: half note, half rest, tied quarter notes, dotted half note
      • Pentatonic tonality
      • Meter: simple vs. compound
      • Bordun/drone accompaniment
      • Crescendo/decrescendo
      • Accelerando/ritardando
      • Singing with proper breath and support

Marking Quarter 4:

  • In quarter 4, second grade students will be going through the performing and creating processes for some select songs. These processes will facilitate learning the following concepts:
      • Pitch reading: Do, Re, pentatonic
      • Pitch notating: Pentatonic
      • Rhythm notating: half note, half rest, dotted half note
      • Bordun/drone accompaniment
      • Singing within a limited range
      • Musical symbols: Barlines, treble clef, repeat sign, double barline
