What is Model United Nations (MUN)?
Full year Elective Course
Open to 7th and 8th Grade students
Focuses on developing students' skills in research, writing, debating, public speaking, and critical thinking.
COURSE SUMMARY
Model UN is an international program where students learn about the objectives and achievements of the United Nations. Students participate in competitive simulations where they represent countries’ interests in order to solve real-world international conflicts. Through a diverse range of activities, students strengthen their skills in debating, public speaking, writing position papers, diplomacy, research, leadership, and collaborative team work. These activities further develop students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Model UN Conferences held in class are student-led and require the active participation of all students. We also attend regional conferences during weekends. Students love winning awards at the conferences, such as the Best Delegate Award and the Best Position Paper award. Through advocacy initiatives in our community, students also have opportunities to earn SSL hours throughout the year.

Ms. Dunlap's Corner
Welcome to my corner! I love teaching this class and I love the enthusiasm and commitment of our incredible Model UN students.
Last summer I had the opportunity to travel to Tunisia with the State Department to lead a two-week training for university students. I loved meeting so many enthusiastic young teachers and change-makers. It reminded me that we are all life-long learners with so much to share. We all have diverse experiences in our lives that guide how we see the world. We are all teachers and all students. I want to always carry this love of learning with me. In this course, we learn that no topic is too challenging for us to tackle but we must be courageous enough to try.
I hope that if you sign up for Model UN, you will bring with you your sense of wonder and excitement. Keep your open-mindedness and compassion for all people around the world. Finally, be prepared to be a problem solver by identifying unique and innovative solutions to global challenges. We can start small to make the world a better place one step at a time.
