Final Reflections on the 2023-2024 Academic Year
We concluded our 4th year of Model UN at SSIMS and it was a spectacular year in every way. This year SSIMS MUN delegates pushed their intellectual prowess to the limit by participating in more conferences than we could have even imagined, including one national conference (NHSMUN) and three regional conferences (YMCA Hershey, Frederick County, and Arlington), and four in-class conferences. We heard from a wide array of guest speakers at our Field Trip to the State Department, In-School Field Trips, and classroom visits. Students researched more than 30 different topics in total, and each student wrote more than 6 position papers. Our schedule was rigorous and yet students remained committed to achieving their best in the class and in the MUN conferences. As a result of students' immense hard work, SSIMS won many awards. This year has given us many reasons to celebrate our students' unfailing curiosity and commitment to human rights and social justice. I could not be prouder of their achievements!
Model UN Article featured in SSIMS Spring Jag Mag: You do Model UN, right?
Written by Sylvia & Elon, 8th Grade Students
I was sitting in Science class scrolling through our 10+ page background guide we wrote in 6 days on gun control when my classmate was like “I’m glad I’m not in Model UN”. It was voluntary, and I only wrote like 2-3 pages, thank you. So if you ever heard of somebody talking about a conference or their “country” this article is for you explaining what Model United Nations (or Model UN/MUN if you're cool) is and its influence on Silver Spring International. First we have to establish the basics, it’s not a second history class, rather it's its own elective exploring the intricacies of international diplomacy and politics. Me and my friend Elon, are here to talk about our experiences in our two years in this elective. Obviously run by the wonderful Ms. Dunlap, it occurs in the only room in our building with a “stage” 245 for the past 5 years. Model UN is the number one place in the school to develop friendships, inside jokes, and become a more well-rounded person. There is a whole process of researching that I was originally going to explain but overall this article is more about the impact of MUN on us.
Elon: Model UN has been tremendously impactful on the past two years of my life. Before taking Model UN, I was terrified of public speaking. As I worked through my first months of the class, I struggled with the format of Model UN. Unlike all other curriculums in middle school, Model UN is based around current events, and follows a different format of assignments, similar to a high school research class. We would research, write essays, and then participate in a conference. The hands-on experience of Model UN is engaging, but also the most difficult task I’ve ever attempted. As I mentioned, public speaking was very difficult for me. I struggled with speaking in front of crowds, and had not practiced much before. For my first year, my struggles with public speaking were very present. After a year of Model UN, I felt less confident in my speaking skills than when I started. I felt demotivated, I scuffed a speech at a major conference, and never regained the confidence I had leading into that moment. I was still determined to do better. I started the 2023-24 Model UN school year with motivation, knowing the year would be easier and much more fun. One end goal of MUN for me was to improve in public speaking, and at the time of writing this, I believe I accomplished this goal. For me, the most important skill I learned was open-mindfulness. MUN teaches you compromise, how to hear and respect others opinions, to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. I’ve researched topics big and small, representing nations from around the world. I did not believe what Belarus thought about the Russia-Ukraine War, but I did my best to represent them. At the end of the day, diplomacy is acting in the most beautiful form. Through diplomacy, some of the most influential and important moments were created. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, created by many of the world’s nations, The Geneva Convention being drafted and ratified, even the Revolutionary War, with the U.S. gaining their freedom largely in part from bilateral relations with France. If we can replicate even a fraction of their success, to me, that is a job well done, and the true goal of MUN.
Sylvia: The amount of growth you experience in Model UN is immense just like all the fancy vocabulary words you now use. The main thing for me in Model United Nations was learning confidence, a trait that most Middle schoolers including myself lacked. Through not just the speeches but your writing you learn that you are knowledgeable about the world. It took time, especially for me who was so afraid to mess up until one day I just raised my placard and gave a speech. Now I’ve improved vastly even getting 3 of the most coveted things in the MUN, awards. I have two 3rd places and two 2nds for my hard work. While it’s really not that impressive to others considering it was just Middle Schoolers or people who were very old choosing me that progress. I’ve spent countless hours thinking about moderated caucus ideas and my formatting for my position paper. I truly learned to finally not care what others think just like most countries don’t care about what the UN says. That was one of the hardest parts of middle school for me and being able to say, sure you may have more awards than me but I’ve progressed to a point where I can finally be proud of the 15+ hours of toiling on a 1,500-word paper on nutrition in a refugee camp. So Ms. Dunlap and Model United Nations thank you for all the growth and the ability to become a more open-minded person. I’ll leave you with this Haiku:

MUN ALIEN INVASION SIMULATION
We ended the academic year with another student-created MUN Conference. This time, the conference focused on a much more silly topic- an Alien Invasion Crisis in the year 2032. This conference required students to be immensely creative and imagine the unthinkable. Throughout the conference, it was clear that this was a 100% student-led and student-created conference. Secretary Dunlap is a creative eduIn this hilarious simulation, Harry Styles was the President of South Korea, and Antarctica was led by an angry mob of disgruntled elves from Santa's Workshop. The conference went completely overboard, with an ongoing civil war in Malta between the "skibidi rizzlers" and "skibidii toilet." In the end, it was unclear if the aliens achieved their mission to take over the world, as the Russian Federation formed an alliance with the aliens and it seemed that the Maltese civil war spread to the rest of the world. We concluded our conference with uncertainty of the future. We can only hope that these events do not take place in the future. There are no guarantees as to what could happen.
4th Annual GMS-SSIMS Conference
On May 18, 2024, 70 SSIMS students participated in the 4th Annual Gaithersburg Middle School Model UN Conference. SSIMS students held leadership roles in the conference, working as Presidents, Vice Presidents, and Moderators. The topics for our conference this year included Prison Reform, Gender Equity in the Workplace, and Climate Change. Students conducted a tremendous level of research to prepare for the conference. During the conference students delivered opening speeches and proposed topics for moderated caucuses. The entire conference was student-led. It was incredible to see our delegates showcase their leadership skills and navigate difficult transitions during the conference. Students proposed innovative solutions to real-world complex problems. I have no doubt that SSIMS MUN students will one day find ways to implement these creative ways to make the world a more equitable, peaceful, and clean place for future generations.
In-School Field Trip: Pathways to Peace
On April 29, 2024, Model UN students welcomed two guest speakers for an In-School MUN field trip. The inspiration for the field trip came from a student's letter to Congressman Raskin's office and his subsequent request to meet with our students. This was an exciting opportunity for students to hear from two dynamic guest speakers, including:
Palwasha Kakar, Director of Religion and Inclusive Societies at the U.S. Institute of Peace
Congressman Jamie Raskin, representing Maryland's 8th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Our presenters were engaging and inspiring. Ms. Kakar spoke about her work around the world to build more inclusive, peaceful societies. Ms. Raskin spoke about civic engagement and the power of young people to make a significant contribution to the world.
In-Class Conference: Gun Reform, April 2024
This year we decided to try something different: To allow students to write their own Background Guide and Graphic Organizers to create their own Model UN Conference, one that is completely student-led. As part of our schools' MYP Community Project, one student chose to focus on our Model UN community and raise awareness about a topic that directly impacts young people- guns. The students worked to write a 13-page Background Guide that outlines the historical framework and current issues involved in the topic of Gun Reform. Students chose to focus on U.S. States rather than countries for this topic to allow their research to really dig deep into U.S. policies. Each student was assigned a state and they represented that state's view on the topic. Representing a state's point of view, regardless of the students' personal point of view posed a challenge for many students but they rose to the challenge.

FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell Visits SSIMS
April 15, 2024
On April 15, 2024, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell visited SSIMS after receiving a letter from a student. It was an immense honor to welcome Ms. Criswell to our school. Ms. Criswell's presentation shared her diverse experience working in the field of emergency response and disaster risk reduction. One of the highlights of the visit was hearing students' questions and seeing their high level of engagement. This was one student's summary of the visit, "It was really fun and I loved how most of it was her taking questions from the audience and really engaging with us students, rather than having a slideshow or some other presentation. I also loved how she was very positive, while an important topic was being discussed, she still maintained a very energetic and happy feel in the room." Here are some additional student responses to the visit:
Thank you so much Ms. Criswell, I learned so much about how to be better prepared, like building the 72-hour kit, and new architectures that are helping people survive better in their homes, like the tall supports/stilts under new homes.
Ms.Criswell is a very important leader to our country. She helps communities prepare and recover from natural disasters and she is a great women role model.
[The] presentation was very inspiring and interesting, I took away a lot of important information that will positively impact me and my family in the future.
I learned that young people should have a serious and important talk with others and their families about the importance of preparing for natural disasters and talk about ways to be better prepared for it.
The information she shared about older relatives was really important to me because I have multiple relatives that would be very vulnerable during a natural disaster or emergency.
Young women need role models in fields like this.
Guest Speaker: Forestry Inspector Natasha Shangold, March 15, 2024
On March 15, 2024, SSIMs Model UN students welcomed a guest speaker to our Period 8 class, Natasha Shangold, who works as a Forestry Inspector for the city of Rockville, Maryland. Ms. Shangold coordinad a visited to our school after receiving a letter from a student about invasive species in Montgomery County. During the presentation, Ms. Shangold took the students to the SSIMS field and showed them how to identify healthy plants and trees and invasive species. It was a wonderful presentation and gave students a real-world example of a profession that students could pursue to put their concern for the environment into action. Ms. Shangold was an enthusiastic role model for the students. I hope that Ms. Shangold can visit us again one day soon! Here is a link to an article published in the Rockville Reports.
National High School Model UN Conference, New York, NY
March 8-11, 2024
Twenty-five SSIMS Model UN students represented our school phenomenally well at the NHSMUN Conference in New York, New York. There were over 3,000 students in attendance, representing more than 70 countries. It was an amazing experience to hear all of the languages spoken throughout the hallways of the Midtown Hilton. Our delegates participated in nine different committees, such as the Commission on the Status of Women. Security Council, Human Rights Council, and the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. In the committee sessions, delegates delivered speeches, proposed ideas for moderated caucuses, and networked and gained support for their resolutions in unmoderated caucuses.
Some delegates reported that they gave over 20 speeches while other delegates excitedly recounted how a mock Greta Thunberg appeared at their committee and asked “how dare” they kill all the fish in the Nile (not in real life!). Overall, it was an amazing experience for our delegates to participate in the conference. Our delegates worked tirelessly throughout four days to build consensus in the group for the best solutions to the problems they were working to solve, which included: Neglect and Abuse in Prison Systems, the Situation in Lebanon, Improving Labor Standards in the Global Economy, and Maintaining the Largest Refugee Camp in the World, among others. This conference provided our students with the opportunity to share their learning on a national stage and they loved every minute of it. We would like to thank our amazing chaperone, Ms. Doctor.
"NHSMUN was an amazing experience, one of the best MUN experiences I've ever had. I was thrilled to have the chance to go and it lived up past my expectations. I had so much fun and learned so many things-- I'm excited to keep pursuing MUN and maybe attend NHSMUN in the future! "
"NHSMUN is beautifully put together. It takes hard work and dedication but is immensely rewarding, fun, and exciting."
"NHSMUN is a great experience teaching you about time management and how to create responses under pressure."
"NHSMUN is a fantastic experience, where you can learn, have fun, and practice your skills in a competitive but enjoyable way"
"NHSMUN is one of the best things I have ever done, I feel like I matured, bonded with the class, learned a lot ... and I will remember it forever."
From the "if Taylor Swift should come to the Kutupalong refugee camp?" moderated causes to the jokes and friends forged on the streets and elevators of NYC, NHSMUN is truly an experience. If you ever have the opportunity to go to this wonderful, chaotic, and inspiring Model UN conference, you will learn more about the world and your friends than you ever thought you could know.
"NHSMUN was an amazing educational opportunity that has taught me the importance of presence and collaboration. I hope to utilize my experiences from this trip and apply them to future conferences and other similar experiences."
Arlington Model UN Conference, February 24, 2024
On February 24th, 2024 we finally attended the Arlington MUN Conference at Dorothy Hamm Middle School after the conference was cancelled on two previous occasions. It was a wonderful conference organized by a small group of Middle School teachers. The committee sessions were led by middle school students, which our delegates found challenging. The conference was highly competitive and yet we still won two awards. We are so proud of ALL students for their participation and hard work! We would like to express our appreciation to our two parent chaperones, Ms. Johnson and Mr. Howell.
Frederick County (FCPS) Model UN Conference - Frederick, Maryland
January 13, 2024
On January 13, 2024, 48 delegates from Silver Spring International Middle School attended the Frederick County (FCPS) Model UN Conference. Students debated topics ranging from Piracy on the High Seas, Invasive Species, Emergency Response to Disasters, and Nuclear Non-Proliferation. The debate was intense in the committee sessions, as the delegates presented their country's (often unpopular) perspectives. Some of the challenging positions to defend included Iran, Syria, the Russian Federation, and Pakistan. The delegates did their best and their hard work paid off because each of these delegates returned home with an award. Delegates learned that sometimes a challenging position can bring out their best skills in debate and diplomacy. In total, SSIMS delegates won 20 awards. The delegates worked as a team in the sessions and their unity and collaboration skills were in the spotlight. Congratulations to ALL delegates who participated in the conference. Each delegate represented our school with the spirit of our school message: Have fun, learn something new, and set a plan into action to create positive change in the world. We would like to express our appreciation to our two parent chaperones, Ms. Newsome and Mr. Howell. Thank you also to our student volunteers who stayed after school to put together our folders. Thank you!!!!!

YMCA MUN Conference - Hershey Lodge, Pennsylvania
January 5-7, 2024
From January 5-7, 2024, 23 delegates from Silver Spring International Middle School attended the YMCA Model UN Conference at the Hershey Lodge in Hershey, Pennsylvania. This conference included nearly 200 middle school students from schools in six states in the NE region (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, and New Jersey). Simultaneously, there was a High School Model UN Conference taking place that included over 1,300 delegates. The conference was coordinated by the YMCA but led by a comiitted, and impressive, team of Alumni of the program who ran the entire event as volunteers.
During the three-day conference, students participated in three different types of Model UN Conferences (General Assembly, ICC, and Crisis). On the first day, students participated in a conference of the the General Assembly, where students debated the topics of Countering Disinformation and Food Security. During the conference, students shared their opening speeches, worked in blocs to write resolutions, and presented their resolutions. In addition, students were introduced to the conference's parliamentary procedures and they spent time practicing how to share their ideas in a "non-judgemental" way.
On the second day, delegates participated in a conference for the International Criminal Court (ICC). In these conferences, students were assigned to either the defense, prosecution, or jury in the cases against Truman or Pol Pot. In these committee sessions, students were transformed into lawyers and it was truly awe inspiring to witness this transformation as the delegates gave their opening and closing remarks with dramatic pauses and pleas for impartiality from the juries. After this intense day of debate and discussion, students participated in evening activities, which included a Delegate Dance.
On the third and final day, delegates participated in a Crisis simulation, where students were tasked with creating a plan for action in response of the crisis unfolding in South Sudan. The urgent need for international action inspired delegates to write impassioned speeches and resolutions to meet the urgent needs of civilians.
Over three days, our delegates met many new friends from schools across the region, as well as forming a strong bond with their classmates from SSIMS. Our delegation was excited to see our very own delegate, Lexi, win an award in recognition of her hard work throughout the weekend. Here are some quotes from the delegates shared about their experiences:
"The YMCA MUN Conference was a great first MUN experience, and was filled with teamwork, a variety of committees, and overall lots of great moments (Also amazing food.)"
"The YMCA MUN Conference is a amazing place to meet new people and express yourself."
"The YMCA MUN Conference was my favorite conference ever, I met so many new people and had so much fun learning about these serious topics. THE FOOD WAS TO DIE FOR!!!"
We would like to express a special THANK YOU to Ms. Cortes for being an amazing chaperone! Thank you also to our student volunteers who stayed after school to put together our folders, Sylvia and Bemnt. Thank you!!!!
Silver Spring International Middle School Students Visit the U.S. Department of State,
December 12, 2023
On December 12, 2023, fifty students from Silver Spring International Middle School participated in a field trip to the United States Department of State. The field trip was organized in order to support our delegates in their research and preparation for upcoming Model UN Conferences. During the visit, students met with experts in the field who shared their experiences working for the State Department on a range of topics, including invasive species, nuclear non-proliferation, emergency response to disasters, food security, and countering disinformation. Students also loved their visit to the Ralph Bunche library and the Museum of Diplomacy. It was an inspiring day for all students to hear from experts, ask questions, and learn more about careers in diplomacy. Many students shared that as a result of the field trip, they now want to pursue careers at the State Department. SSIMS Model UN students would like to send a special thank you to Mr. Boyack, who coordinated the entire conference. Mr. Kelsey also took time out of his busy schedule to share his experiences with the students. Thank you also to Mr. Grimsland for being an amazing chaperone, as well as our two parent chaperones, Ms. Newsome and Ms. Johnson. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fall Model UN Conference - November 7-13, 2023
We held our first in-class Model UN Conference this year from November 7-13, 2023. The conference theme was the World Health Organization and how to improve access to healthcare in order to mitigate the spread of diseases that are preventable by the use of vaccines.
Over the three days, students presented their country's positions, debated ideas, worked collaboratively to identify solutions and write resolutions within their BLOCs, and voted on their resolutions. Students asked each other meaningful questions that required students to think on their feet and resulted in a flurry of "notes" that all had to be screened by the Conference Present and Vice President.
If students could implement their creative solutions they could increase access to healthcare for millions of people around the world. Congratulations to all students who participated in the conference!!!!!!!!! I would also like to send a special shout out to the conference leaders who created a safe and supportive environment for our young delegates to learn and share their ideas.
International Day of Peace - September 21, 2023
SSIMS Model UN students recognized the International Day of Peace in several ways. It was our first year coordinaing activities for the day and it was a special experience for all of us. First, students each researched one "peacebuilder" - a change maker who wanted to make the world a better place. Students made a poster to share the information they learned with the school community. Students made over 100 posters and displayed them around the school. The posters are gorgeous- creative, informative, and inspirational. In addition, students wrote messages of peace on doves with olive branches that they displayed on a bulletin board. Finally, students organized a school-wide activity for the entire school where students learned about Peace Day and brainstormed what peace "looks" like to them. Then, students gave an "olive branch" to a friend, parent, family-member, classmate, or teacher, etc. It was nice to come together as a school community to form strong connections with each other about the ideas of peace and why it is so important to each of us in our every day lives. We are already planning ahead for next year!
