Montgomery Blair School Counseling program will include, embrace, and celebrate our diverse population. We will cultivate positive relationships, empower underrepresented populations, foster academic excellence, and promote social emotional well being.
MBHS School Counseling Mission Statement
The mission of the Montgomery Blair High School Counseling program is to provide a comprehensive, intentional, and accessible curriculum that supports all students. We support our students with academics, problem-solving, college and career readiness, and social/emotional development to be successful on their chosen paths. Through effective collaboration with key stakeholders, our comprehensive program nurtures every student's personal journey, meeting their individual needs to ensure equal access to high-quality opportunities. Our students demonstrate resiliency and cultural awareness as they achieve their fullest potential and contribute to the school, community, and society while advocating for themselves and others.
What does a Blair School Counselor do?
Following the American School Counseling Association's National Model, counselors at Montgomery Blair High School provide the following services to students, families, and our school as a whole:
Individual Counseling
Mediations (to alleviate conflict, resolve concerns with peers and teachers)
Crisis Management
Community Resource Referrals
Collaboration with teachers and other staff members
Consultation and coordination with parents & families
Classroom Lessons (on suicide prevention, mental health awareness, college/career readiness with Naviance software, personal body safety)
College & Career Readiness - including advising students throughout the college application process and writing recommendation letters for all of our seniors.
Additional Responsibilities of MBHS Counselors:
Monitoring academic progress of students
Facilitating conferences with students and their teachers
Articulating within the DCC Consortia with our multiple feeder middle schools
Scheduling
Case Managing Section 504 Plans and supporting the IEP teams within our role
Working collaboratively with teachers, administrators, PPW, PCC & Social Worker to close the opportunity gap, and ensure our programs are equitable
Confidentiality Guidelines
Private information that is shared with the counselor is considered confidential (meaning it will not be shared with others), with the following exceptions:
Potential harm to the student or others
Cases of suspected abuse and/or neglect
Legal proceedings
Permission is granted by the student to share information
As school counselors regularly consult and collaborate with staff members regarding student needs, only information that is deemed necessary to fully support the student will be shared with staff.
