LOCKER CLEANOUT Announcement:
The Green Team is asking you to please recycle or even better, REUSE/REPURPOSE as much as possible from your locker as you prepare for the end of the year. We will work with Building Services to place recycling containers during the event in each hallway, and we will move the recyclables to the dumpsters, and collect any unused/unwanted school supplies for donations to future students.

Better World Day: Friday, May 5 2023
Better World Day is an annual, national event showcasing student learning that contributes to a better world.
Students work in partnership with each other and their local communities on this day to engage in and celebrate meaningful student work that positively impacts the world around them. The Green Team, The Minority Scholars Program, and The Eastern Chorus is planning a project for Better World Day, 2023. We are celebrating our Maryland Green School Award by encouraging all teachers to take their content instruction outside (weather permitting of course) and/or do a service project together to positively impact our world.
School Yard Clean Up
Date April 19th After School: Join the Green Team during Earth Week for a School Yard Clean Up!
The Green Team did a plastics only Clean Up of the field on December 13th. On February 22nd, the Music Students helped us out and collected a LOT of litter. Thank you, Ms. Shattuck!
We collected MANY plastic bottles, cans, and paper, and placed them in the proper bins. A larger Clean Up will occur in January weather permitting. Contact Ms. Peter if you are interested in joining us!
Eagle Nation: Get ready for the Eastern Eagle Strut by wearing your WILDEST animal print outfit, accessory, Earth Related Shirt, or anything GREEN to show your support for Eastern's Green Team and all the wildlife the world has to offer us.
Classes will be able to participate in the Live Event from 10-12:30 or participate in a lesson with their class to understand how partnerships work together to make effective progress on the immense task of moving the relationship of people and nature onto the right path during an online, live broadcast from National Geographic Society's Grosvenor Auditorium, featuring how the power of visual arts bring people together to raise awareness and promote discussions among different parts of the world.

Literally Green
*UPDATE: OUR GRANT IS FUNDED!!!
EMS Green Team wants to provide plants to classrooms. We have applied for a grant from MAEOE to provide each room with an air-purifying plant. We have been approved for a grant to make it happen! We are working on a pre-project survey, and we have partnered with Sills, a local plant company to put the project into action!

Earth Day Invasive Weed Warrior Project
COMMUNITY WEED WARRIOR EVENT at EMS
10am-12pm Saturday, April 22, 2023 EARTH DAY 2023 at Eastern Middle School.
We took a tour of the grounds this fall, and noted MANY invasive species of plants that are killing the local wildlife and trees that surround our school. We had a naturalist come tour and make recommendations and we have a certified weed warrior parent volunteer helping us plan the day. We have researched and mapped out our zone to invade! We will document and record data for our project on iNaturalist and Globe Protocol
The Eastern Middle School Green Team is culminating our Earth Week Celebration on Earth Day with our first ever Weed Warrior Project. We are If you are interested in joining, please let Ms. Peter or Ms. Maizlish know. Date: April 22, 2023 from 10am-12pm.
SSL Hours will be given to student volunteers. If you can't be there but want to donate or loan equipment, see the signup sheet for opportunities. It takes a village!

Green Team will work on our MD Green School Application during meetings, as well as complete Recycling Audits, and work to improve classroom recycling stations.

Eagle Strut /World Wildlife Day at Eastern: Wear Wild Animal Prints and Run for Fun with the PTSA after school.
