Parents & Guardians of 10th grade students: Students should have submitted their first MYP Personal Project assignment,✅Brainstorming a Topic, by Friday, Oct. 11th.
What is the MYP Personal Project (MYP PP)? The MYP PP is a culminating project for 10th graders and an IB requirement for the IB Middle Years Program (MYP). This student-driven project allows students to explore a personally motivating topic in order to create a unique product while showcasing their MYP learning. This first lesson will introduce the the components and purpose of the MYP Personal Project at SVHS, and support student brainstorming possible topics. Please click here for more information.
What are the expectations and benefits of the MYP PP? As an IB World schools, we expect all 10th graders to complete their MYP PP. Some of the benefits of completing the MYP PP include:
developing essential academic and socioemotional IB Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills
earning a .5 elective credit for “MYP Research Seminar”
earning 15 SSL hours
completing a unique and impressive achievement that can be shared when applying to a job, internship, or college
preparation for IB DP/CP courses in 11th & 12th grade.
How do students earn the .5 MYP Research Seminar credit? 10th grade students should be enrolled in the MYP course for semester 2. This is a Credit/No Grade course that does not impact student GPA.
If the student successfully completes the requirements of the MYP PP, then “Credit” is added to their transcript for the .5 elective course, as well as 15 SSL hours. This communicates to anyone viewing a student's transcript, including college and universities, that the student fulfilled the expectation that they complete a MYP PP.
If the student does not successfully complete the requirements, then a “No Grade” is added to their transcript for the course.
How can I support my student? You can support your student by asking them about their topic ideas and checking that they have submitted their first assignment in Canvas.
Please let me know if you have any questions! My email is Kimberly_M_Becraft@mcpsmd.org.
Mrs. Becraft, SVHS IB Middle Years Program (MYP) Coordinator

Library Media Center News: Spotlight on Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship Week: October 14-18 👩💻
Seneca Valley High School first earned recognition as a Common Sense Education Digital Citizenship School in 2018 and has since continued to partner with Common Sense Education to empower students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly online. As part of this initiative, students will participate in at least 3 schoolwide digital citizenship lessons throughout the course of the year.
This week, students can earn SSL hours by watching Digital Citizenship videos and submitting a reflection. Visit bit.ly/DIGCITWEEK2024 or stop by the Library Media Center for details on how to participate.
We hope you will join us in the opportunity to engage your children in conversations about the ways we interact with technology and the impact these interactions may have on our lives. Ideas for family discussion topics may be accessed through articles on the Common Sense Media Blog for Parents and Caregivers, which is linked here for your convenience and also on the SVHS website homepage. In addition, Your Characters Count, an MCPS website dedicated to digital citizenship, offers resources and ideas for families, students, and staff.

Chromebook Care
Families, many students are reporting damage to Chromebooks. Please know that each student is financially responsible for damage caused or loss of any Chromebook and charger that is checked out to the student. The device is loaned to the student to be used for instructional purposes only and in accordance with MCPS Regulation IGT-RA, User Responsibilities for Computer Systems, Electronic Information, and Network Security. No cost is associated for a student to borrow, possess, or use an MCPS Chromebook. A family is only financially responsible when there is avoidable damage to the device. If the device is faulty, there is no charge to the family; however, if the damage is considered avoidable or the device or charger is lost, the family will be charged according to MCPS current parts and replacement costs.
*The chart above identifies the costs associated with fixing or replacing a Chromebook due to avoidable damage, theft, or loss, and was shared with students in Homeroom on the 1st day of school. For more information about student Chromebook responsibilities, please see the Chromebook Acceptable Use Policy, available in both English and Spanish.
Action: Complete the Google, YouTube, and Online Digital Consent Form
Parents and guardians - if your student is in grade 9, new to MCPS, or if you have not previously submitted the G-Suite for Education: Additional Services form, please give your student(s) permission to access and use technology resources as part of their learning experience. Access to the form is via ParentVUE, as part of the Annual Verification process.
From Technology Information and Support for Parents:
What is Annual Verification and how do I do this in ParentVue?
In the past, yellow emergency cards and a variety of other forms were sent home with students on the first day of school so that families could communicate updates about contact information, health, directory withholdings, emergency contacts, and more. This process will now take place in ParentVUE using Online Registration.
Failure to provide consent to Additional Services and Supplemental Online Digital Tools will not result in loss of access to the G-Suite Core Services, but will limit access to other technology resources used to facilitate teaching and learning. Consent remains valid for the entire time the student is enrolled in an MCPS high school and may be rescinded at any time.
The MCPS Volunteer webpage has been updated.
https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/student-leadership/volunteer.aspx
On that webpage, you will find updates for SY24-25 and a chart for “who needs what.” There is also a resource on the far right called: School Guidance for Volunteers. If there are any volunteers who did this process last year, then they are good for this year. Any new volunteers would need to complete the compliance measures listed below.
One-time volunteers who will ALWAYS be accompanied by MCPS staff
One-time volunteers who will never be alone with students at the MCPS school do NOT need to complete the compliance measures.
They WILL need to check-in and check-out of the main office and scan their driver's license/identification cards through the Visitor Management System (VMS). Once the volunteer clears the VMS, they must be badged (the VMS creates a sticker badge) and remain under supervision of an MCPS professional while with students.
Volunteers who will be attending field trips or supporting the school as a regular volunteer (This includes, but is not limited to Dads on Duty participants)
These volunteers must complete BOTH the online child abuse and neglect training and the COVID attestation process.
Volunteers can pull their grade sheet showing a total of 183.3%. This grade shows completion of both processes.
They WILL need to check-in and check-out of the main office and scan their driver's license/identification cards through the Visitor Management System (VMS).
Once the volunteer clears the VMS, they must be badged (the VMS creates a sticker badge) and remain under supervision of an MCPS professional while with students.
Volunteers who will be attending field trips or supporting the school as a frequent volunteer AND will be alone with students.
In addition to the online child abuse and neglect training and the COVID attestation compliance measures, the volunteer must have completed the finger printing process.
Fingerprinting/Background check (only if they are working alone with students without supervision of an MCPS staff member or other type of volunteer service, per the Volunteers regulation and FAQ )

SVHS PTSA
Greetings SVHS families,
Hope everyone is doing well. We hope you can join us on October 15th at 6:30pm in the school’s media center. Mr. Carlos Nalda, College/Career Information Coordinator will be doing a presentation at our PTSA meeting.
We know your time is valuable, so it is understood that it can be difficult finding time to volunteer. However, to support our students and community, we have to work together. Your help is needed. You will not be doing this alone as you will have the support of the PTSA to get you started.
A Parent Council (PC) Representative for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The NAACP and Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) have an established partnership in which it would like each school to have an NAACP Parent Council Representative. Seneca Valley HS currently does not have one. This is not a PTSA role/committee, but more of an overall school representative role. Please let the PTSA know if you are interested in being the NAACP PC for SVHS.
The Parents’ Council provides a forum through which interested citizens may offer assistance, guidance and support to African American parents and students at MCPS to pursue the highest quality education possible through encouragement, information sharing, positive motivation, critical evaluation and advocacy.
Some of the things involved with this role are:
Provide information about educational issues
Host workshops and meetings to educate parents to be effective advocates for their children to promote parental involvement
Collaborate with PTA and MCPS developing strategies to close the achievement gap Provide outreach to parents and students and Provide a forum for information exchange
Refer and link students with programs that provide academic support and en-richment Attend PTSA meetings monthly and participate on executive committees
Organize at least 3 meetings each school year to discuss issues of concern, and deliver information and training to parents helping to increase knowledge and participation in their children’s education.
More information about the Montgomery County NAACP can be found here https://naacp-mc.org/
African American Parent Council (AAPC) - This role can also be the same person who is the NAACP parent representative.
The SVHS AAPC is a group of SVHS parents and students who want to advocate for equality and equity in education. AAPC will work with the school and community to encourage and support regular and frequent celebrations that honor the achievements of students in the African American community. The committee will also sponsor monthly/quarterly activities that promote equity, access, and opportunity for families.
The After-PROM (AP)
After-PROM has become a treasured tradition of all high schools and Seneca Valley HS is no exception. The After-PROM theme is driven by students in collaboration with parent volunteers. Its purpose is maintaining a nostalgic theme of students’ last night together. Doing so in a safe, equitable and entertaining environment for all our students! Again, the theme of the event is student driven, while the PTSA and the AP committee work diligently behind the scenes to make this memorable event successful!
If you are interested in learning more about any of these committees email svhsptsapres@gmail.com or complete this Volunteer Form.
Join the PTSA and show your support and help us continue showing we are a strong community. You can Join Here.

Applying to Four-Year Colleges - Transcript Requests and Confirming Application Deadlines in Naviance!
Hello Seniors! We are noticing that many of you still have yet to request your transcript in Naviance for us to send along to colleges. Also, many of you have yet to update your college application deadlines in Naviance. Please see below.
Request an official transcript via Naviance.
In Naviance, Click on the “Colleges” tab at the top of the screen.
Click on “Manage Transcripts”
Click on the “+” button
At this point, we are only requesting “Initial” and “Mid year” transcripts
**Make sure you add ALL COLLEGES you are applying to in your list on Naviance.
Final transcripts are only sent to the college you decide to attend once you have made that decision! Requesting the Final Transcript typically happens by May 1, which is College Decision Day deadline for many schools.
If your college does not accept Naviance, then the Counselor is provided with a school-specific link or email address for upload. This typically occurs for non-Common App schools when the student fills out an online application.
Please review your Naviance and make sure all application deadlines are correct!
It is very important that your deadlines in Naviance match the deadline you plan to apply by! If a deadline is incorrect in Naviance, a staff member may miss a deadline or think they have more time to complete a letter of recommendation for you.
For example, if you plan to apply to a school’s Early Action Deadline of November, but you have a January deadline listed in Naviance, that can cause a major issue or delay in a school receiving application materials. Please review below.
How to to check or change college application deadlines in Naviance:
Log into Naviance
Click on "College"
Click on "Colleges I'm Applying To"
Review each of your college's deadlines
If a date needs to be changed, click "Edit", make the change, and make sure you save!
Remember that the SVHS College Application Packet is the go-to document for applying to colleges at SVHS. It is a step-by-step guide on how to apply and includes everything that you need to complete. Please use this document to get started on college applications and follow all of the steps!

SchoolCash Online
Dear Parent/Guardian,
Montgomery County Public Schools has transitioned to a new online payment system called SchoolCash Online as its preferred method of payment for school-related fees such as fundraisers, field trips, obligations, etc. (Please note that the new payment system is NOT related to school cafeteria accounts)
SchoolCash Online helps parents/guardians and community members pay school-related fees safely, quickly, and easily. SchoolCash Online will help increase efficiency and security at schools by making payments directly into schools’ bank accounts and eliminating the need for teachers to handle money. In addition, once registered, you will be immediately informed about school activities!
Powered by KEV Group, SchoolCash Online is the industry leader in the management of school fees. The new system puts all of the school-related fees online for purchase so users can make purchases online using a credit card or e-check. A processing fee will be included on all items available for purchase, regardless of the type of payment used on SchoolCash Online or at the school.
Parents/guardians can register now at - https://mcpsmd.schoolcashonline.com/
The MCPS Code of Conduct and A Student's Guide to Rights & Responsibilities will be distributed to all students in September.
They are also online at http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/students/rights.
Safety Tips for Walkers
Cross the street at marked crosswalks whenever possible.
Stop and look every time before crossing streets, even when you have the right-of-way, and especially at intersections with "right turn on red."
Before crossing, look left, right, then left again, and over your shoulder for turning vehicles.
Begin crossing the street on "Walk" signals-never on a solid or flashing "Don't Walk."
Use pedestrian pushbuttons to activate/extend the walk signal.
Use sidewalks. If none, walk facing traffic so you see vehicles, and drivers see you.
Make eye contact with drivers so they see you. Never assume they do.
Stay visible after dark and in bad weather with reflectors or retroreflective clothing.
