This course provides a rigorous introduction to language and culture. It stresses the development of oral communication, reading, writing, and listening skills. Students will apply introductory skills in great depth, conduct analyses in the target language, and engage in discussions and presentations in different modalities.

CLASSROOM RULES
Everyone is expected to respect everyone else in the class. This includes teachers, classmates, and guests.
Students are expected to arrive on time to class.
Students are expected to be prepared with the appropriate materials every day.
Students may not leave the classroom without notifying the teacher.
Listen with the intent to understand.
Focus on the class and the activities at hand. No work from other classes is allowed.
Speak Spanish. Spanish is our target language. It is the language that you are in this class to learn. In order to be successful in this class it is extremely important to speak the target language in class as much as possible.
The use of electronic translators (other than to look up a word) is considered academic dishonesty and will be penalized with a 0 on the assignment and referred to the school administration for disciplinary action.
MAKEUP WORK:
If you are absent from class, it is your responsibility to get the notes from a friend and to see me about the work you missed.
You have two days for every day absent to make up the work.
If you miss an assessment, It is your responsibility to contact me in order to schedule a make up within five days. After that time the missing grade becomes a zero.
LATE WORK POLICY:
There will be a 10% off penalty for every day of class that work is late.
PARTICIPATION:
Languages are learned by speaking them, therefore active participation in class is both necessary and expected.
By the end of the first month of class, communication in the classroom is expected to be 90% in Spanish. Lack of intent and compliance will have an impact on individual grades.
ELECTRONIC DEVICE POLICY:
No cell phones or personal electronic devices allowed unless instructed by the teacher.
Cellular phones must be silenced and placed in the cell phone holder upon entering the classroom.
