The ASHP PGY1 Program Purpose: PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. McLaren Oakland provides a twelve month residency position for one residency candidate beginning at the end of June. The residency program at McLaren Oakland Hospital includes six weeks required/elective experiences and 12 months required longitudinal learning experiences.

Each resident will have an individualized schedule and will work closely with their preceptors to maximize their experience. Feedback will be given at the midpoint and end of each rotation through verbal and written evaluations . Throughout the year resident will be assigned to staff on a scheduled basis.
Each resident will complete a longitudinal research project and present their study results at the ASHP Midyear Conference and Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference to strengthen comprehensive understanding of clinical pharmacy. Residents also have the opportunity to participate in the following activities: journal club presentations, P&T drug monographs, medication use evaluations, newsletter articles and case presentations.
Residents will be trained through a wide variety of rotations, learning pharmacy operations, and gaining clinical practice experience. Throughout the year residents will also have the opportunity to participate in medical education lectures.
McLaren Oakland offers an academic teaching certificate through Wayne State University and ACLS/BLS training and certification. Residents will also be heavily involved with pharmacy students on IPPE and APPE rotations.
Residents will select a research project that meets their interest from a list provided by the clinical pharmacy preceptors in July. Completing the project will involve creating a proposal, obtaining IRB approval, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing a written summary of the project and results. The residency project will be presented in poster format at the ASHP Midyear Conference or Great Lakes Pharmacy Resident Conference.
