Application Instructions and Requirements

All 4^th year medical students applying for residency should apply to the program via ERAS. The application may be submitted anytime before October 1st of the year, prior to the desired contract year. If an interview is granted, it will be scheduled after the application is received from ERAS.

Students interested in Orthopedic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Internal Medicine and ENT are strongly encouraged to rotate at McLaren Oakland.

Interview and Selection Criteria

In accordance with McLaren Oakland’s Department of Anesthesiology Residency Program’s Policy on Recruitment and Appointment, the following describes the eligibility requirements, the selection criteria and the procedure for appointment to the program.

The Residency program uses both objective and subjective criteria to select applicants. The Program Director, and Selection Committee are responsible for selection and appointment of residents to the program. The application process meets all requirements of the Equal Employment Opportunity and the Americans with Disability Acts and does not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or veteran’s status. The criteria and processes for resident selection follow:

Application Process

1. Applicants should submit using the Electronic Resident Application Service (ERAS). This is the only avenue by which applications will be considered.
2. Candidates will not get special consideration by circumventing the process and emailing the program director or graduate medical education coordinator. This behavior is highly discouraged.

Eligibility

All applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. Ability to carry out the duties as required of the residency program.
2. Proficient in the English language, to include reading printed and cursive English, writing (printing or typing) English text, understanding spoken English on conversational and medical topics, speaking English on conversational and medical topics as determined by the program director and/or selection committee.
3. Meet one of the following qualifications:

a. Osteopathic Programs: Applicants for all osteopathic training programs must be graduates of Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) accredited colleges of osteopathic medicine and meet all requirements set forth in the AOA basic standards of the program they wish to enter. All osteopathic applicants must be members of the AOA and maintain membership during their specialty training.

b. ACGME Programs: Applicants for all ACGME training programs must be graduates of:

i. A medical school in the United States or Canada, accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or,

ii. A college of osteopathic medicine in the United States, accredited by the (COCA); or,

iii. A medical school outside of the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualifications:

1. Hold a currently-valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or,

2. Hold a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or,

3. Graduated from a medical school outside the United States and has completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

Licensure: All House Staff Officers (HSOs) are required to have an appropriate training license consistent with state and local requirements during their training. Licenses will be held in the teaching site’s Department of Medical Education. Applicants that are not eligible to obtain a State of Michigan license cannot be considered for McLaren GME programs.

Selection

1. Applications are downloaded from ERAS and reviewed for eligibility and completion by the program coordinator. The following information must be received before the application will be considered and before an applicant is invited for an interview:

a. Medical School Transcript

b. Personal Statement

c. Curriculum Vitae

d. Eligibility to Work Status

e. Three Letters of Recommendation

f. Dean's Letter of Reference

g. Students interested in Anesthesiology are strongly encouraged to rotate at McLaren Oakland.

2. Once an applicant has been found to meet minimal selection criteria, the program coordinator distributes applicant information to selection committee members for review.

3. The selection committee selects applicants to interview.

4. Invitations to interview will be made on a rolling basis as applications are reviewed from ERAS.

5. An applicant invited for an interview should review and be familiar with the terms, conditions and benefits of appointment (and employment) including financial support, vacation, professional leave, parental leave, sick leave, professional liability insurance, hospital and health insurance, disability insurance, and other insurance benefits for the resident and their family, and conditions under which living quarters, meals and laundry or the equivalents are provided. This information will be provided to all interviewed candidates on the date of interview. Applicants can also access much of this information through the Resident Handbook at www.mclaren.org/oakland/gme.

6. The interview consists of approximately 30 minutes with faculty members, the program coordinator, and resident representatives.

7. Following the interview, there is an applicant review open discussion forum involving all faculty and current residents, followed by a private meeting of the Program Selection Committee (Program Director, Program Coordinator, and at least 2 members of the Faculty) who determines selection and position on the rank list.

Criteria for selection include:

a. Clinical performance during required rotations and/or audition rotations

b. Confirmation of eligibility requirements

c. Performance on standardized medical tests

d. Must have successfully passed the Level 1 and Level II licensing examination appropriate for the program (COMLEX-USA or USMLE). with NO Failures

e. Overall academic performance in medical school

f. Prior Research and Publication experiences

g. Recent clinical training or experience

h. Demonstrated ability to choose goals and complete the tasks necessary to achieve those goals

i. Maturity and emotional stability

j. Honesty, integrity and reliability

k. Professionalism, verbal and written communication skills

Minimum Score Requirements :

We look at the entire application when evaluating candidates; however, candidates must pass the COMLEX and/or USMLE Step 1, Step 2 Clinical Knowledge, and Step 2 Clinical Skills within the first attempt.

USMLE ^

Step 1 – 228

Step 2 CK – 240

^ If Step 1 or 2 is less than 228, must have 10-15 point increase on USMLE 2

^^ Must have passed all Steps in order to be granted interview or ranked.

^^^ Exceptions may be considered if candidate has done well as a base student or an audition rotation.

COMLEX*

Candidates who take COMLEX Level 1 and COMLEX Level 2 must have a passing score that is at or above the national mean for their exam year.

COMLEX – Step 1 - 560, step 2 - 560

*If COMLEX Level 1 and COMPLEX Level 2 is less than the national average. Must have 10-15 point increase on COMLEX 2.

**Must have passed both in order to be granted interview or ranked.

*** Exceptions may be considered if candidate has done well as a base student or an audition rotation.

Fair Hiring:

It is expected that the Anesthesiology program will act with the best interests of their training program when selecting trainees to enter the program. To ensure transparency and fair hiring practices, the program may need to report situations to the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) prior to offering a position or ranking a candidate for a match process. At the time of the report, the GMEC may make a motion to choose to approve or deny the candidate an opportunity to join the McLaren Oakland house staff.
