Dear Burks Parents!
McKinney ISD has implemented a kindness initiative called “MISD Lives Kind!” We are so excited that Burks Elementary School has been recognized as a "Live Kind" school for the district!
What is Kindness?
Kindness is an expression of acceptance and appreciation that inspires positive action. Kindness is possible when individuals possess the following key skills: Collaboration, Active Listening, Self-Regulation & Coping Skills, Empathy, and Speaking with Positive Intention (CASES).
Students will learn from their teachers and the counselor about what it means to be kind through different “CASES” lessons each month. “Live Kind” will be a theme and common language inside and outside of Burks Elementary! Students, staff and parents will have opportunities to join in on the “Live Kind” movement by doing random acts of kindness, donating materials or time for others, and being a part of a club or group that plans “Burks Lives Kind” projects.
Parents and teachers will be able to send pictures of their child performing acts of kindness to their homeroom teacher, Mrs. Hinkebein or Mrs. Wallace to put on the “Burks Lives Kind" Shout Outs slide at Good Morning Burks (GMB), our monthly pep rally, and also on the Kindness Board in the hallway.
We will be looking for students that stand out as Live Kind “Student Champions” at the end of the school year. If your child is going over and beyond with being involved with kindness at Burks, the teachers can nominate them to be recognized as our “Burks Lives Kind Student Champion” for the school year!:)
Here are a few ways that Burks students will be showing that they “Live Kind” at school:
1. Burks Lives Kind Wall & Shout Outs – In the hallway there are bulletin boards for the “Burks Lives Kind Wall”. When students are caught doing acts of kindness, we will highlight their pictures on the bulletin boards and our monthly Good Morning Burks Pep Rally!
2. Morning Announcements - Wallace Wednesdays: The counselor will give a “Live Kind” quote of the week, and the classes will discuss it in their community circle, or in their morning writing prompt. We will also talk about the character trait of the month on Wednesdays too.
3. Community Circles are so important to check in with everyone, and to form a family style relationship so everyone feels like they belong, that they are cared about, and that they have a place within the group.
4. Individual Classroom Kindness Challenges – classes will have their own daily or weekly kindness projects. Each student, or maybe the entire class, might be assigned a “Live Kind” job for the day or week. The classes might decide to choose another class to send encouraging cards or letters to. Older classes might choose a younger class to go and read with. One thing is for sure…Burks students will be throwing kindness around like confetti!
5. 5th grade Burks Ambassadors – our leadership team will be in charge of organizing different school wide and community service projects.
6. 5th grade Burks Buddies – our student mentor team will be matched up with a Kinder or 1st grade class and will meet with them once a week. They will work on class assignments, read together, and have character building activities.

¡McKinney ISD ha implementado una iniciativa de amabilidad llamada “MISD Lives Kind!” ¡Estamos muy emocionados de que la Escuela Primaria Burks haya sido reconocida como una escuela "Live Kind" para el distrito!
Que es la amabilidads?
Amabilidad es una expresión de aceptación y de apreciación que inspira acciones positivas. La Amabilidad es posible cuando las personas poseen la habilidad de: Colaboración, Poner atención cuando alguien está hablando, Saber enfrentar y actuar de manera positiva en situaciones difíciles (CASES por sus siglas en Ingles).
Los alumnos aprenderán de sus maestros y la Consejera como demostrar la amabilidad a través de lecciones “CASES” cada mes. “Vive la Amabilidad” va a ser el tema y el lenguaje común dentro y fuera de las instalaciones de Burks! Los alumnos, personal administrativo y padres tendrán diferentes oportunidades de vivir este movimiento de amabilidad a través de diferentes actividades, donando materiales o tiempo para ayudar a otros, y pueden llegar a ser parte del club o grupo llamado “Burks Vive la Amabilidad”.
Padres y Maestros podrán subir fotos de sus hijos participando en actos de amabilidad en Tweeter en #BurksLivesKind. También puede mandar fotos al maestro de su hijo, a la Sra. Hinkebein o a la Sra. Wallace para que aparezcan durante la asamblea mensual Good Morning BURKS (GMB) en la sección llamada “Live Kind-Shout Out’s”.
El Dr. Rick McDaniel, Superintendente del Distrito Escolar de Mckinney va a estar buscando a estudiantes que lleven a cabo esta iniciativa para formar parte de “Estudiantes Campeones “al final del año escolar. Si su hijo cumple o sobrepasa esta expectativa de Amabilidad en Burks, los maestros podrían nominarlo para ser considerado como en “Estudiante Campeón.”
A continuación, le damos algunas ideas de como los estudiantes en Burks pueden demostrar “vivir amablemente” en Burks:
1. Mural de la Amabilidad y Libreta en el Salón de Clases – En la Cafetería tenemos un espacio llamado “El Mural de la Amabilidad”. La primera vez que el alumno realice un acto de amabilidad, se le dará un boleto que colocara en el mural. El boleto llevara escrito su nombre y lo que hizo. Así mismo cada clase tendrá un cuaderno llamado “Vive la Amabilidad”. Cada vez que el alumno realice un acto de amabilidad escribirá su nombre y una descripción pequeña de la acción que realizo. Al final del año cada clase podrá revisar y contar los actos de amabilidad que como clase compartieron con otros en la escuela.
2. Noticias Matutinas – Miércoles Wallace: La Consejera dará una frase de como “vivir la Amabilidad” una vez a la semana y cada clase hablará sobre esta frase durante su tiempo de discusión “circulo comunitario” o durante su tiempo de escritura por la mañana. También los miércoles se hablará sobre el tema del Mes.
3. Círculos Comunitarios: Durante este tiempo es cuando los niños podrán interactuar entre ellos y crear un ambiente familiar donde las relaciones entre ellos se fortalezcan y todos se sientan parte del grupo y se cuiden unos a otros.
4. Reto por clase para mostrar la Amabilidad: Cada clase tendrá sus propios proyectos diarios y semanales con este propósito. Es posible que ya sea individualmente o por clase se les sea asignado un proyecto para compartir la amabilidad por un día o una semana. Cada clase escogerá la otra clase a la cual quiera mandar tarjetas de ánimo o pequeñas cartas. Las clases de nivel más alto escogerán clases de los niños más pequeños para leer con ellos. ¡De una cosa estamos seguros…los estudiantes de Burks van a derramar actos de amabilidad como si fuera confeti!
5. Embajadores Burks de 5to: Nuestro equipo de liderazgo estará a cargo de organizar diferentes proyectos de servicio comunitario y comunitario.
6. Compañeros de Burks de 5to grado: nuestro equipo de mentores estudiantiles se reunirá con un pequeño amigo de Kinder o 1er grado y se reunirá con ellos una vez por semana. Trabajarán en tareas de clase, leerán juntos y tendrán actividades para desarrollar el carácter.
7. Hueso de Oro: – Donación para el Refugio de Mascotas (diciembre)
8. Riega el Amor – Reto de Amabilidad - (febrero)
