How do I contact the learning commons?
The best way to reach us is via email. For student technology assistance, please fill out a Student Help Ticket. The CMS Library does not monitor or manage the Student Help Ticket system, so be on the lookout for updates from our campus tech once your ticket is submitted.
When can I visit the learning commons?
The learning commons is open Monday-Friday from 8:20 AM – 4:00 PM.
Please be aware that our hours are subject to change due to other events.
We are a flexible learning environment, meaning that we often have individuals, small groups, and even entire classrooms visiting and using our space. Teachers schedule their classes in the learning commons so that we can collaborate on lessons that incorporate technology, inquiry, research, information literacy, and much more! The learning commons is at the heart of our school and its mission; all students and members of our school community are welcome in our space.
What is the philosophy of the learning commons?
The goal of the CMS Library is to empower the school community with the full spectrum of the information experience: to use it thoughtfully, create it meaningfully, understand it deeply, and enjoy it fully. We are committed to supporting the missions of Cockrill Middle School and McKinney ISD by fostering a dynamic, inclusive environment that grows and transforms alongside the evolving needs of our school community.
We believe in the joy of reading, the power of inquiry, and the imagination that fuels the future—because sometimes, changing your story starts here.
How many books can I check out?
Students can check out one physical book at a time. Students also have access to our digital library, Sora, and can check out up to three e-books or audiobooks at a time. To learn more about Sora, click on the Digital Books tab on the website menu.
When are library books due?
Checkouts are for 21 school days. We ask that you please return your books in a timely manner, as there are often waitlists for many of our books. Digital books are also checked out for three weeks at a time, but will be automatically returned through Sora.
Library books that are overdue by more than 30 days are automatically marked as "Lost" and create a fine in the student's My School Bucks account.
What happens if an item from the library is lost or damaged?
Lost or damaged items must be paid for in order to clear student records and borrow another book. Once an item has been deemed damaged or lost (don’t forget to look under your bed and in your car first!), students will be asked to pay for the items(s). Fees for lost and damaged library items can be paid online with a credit card in the student's My School Bucks account. We also accept monetary payments (checks preferred) that can be processed in the library.
