A dance choreography is not just a set of movements. There is always a purpose. Whether it is to entertain, to convey a deep and personal meaning, or create any messages that the choreographer (creator of the dance set) wants to portray. In this session students will learn movements with direct instructions and figure out a way to relate the choreographer’s purpose back to themselves. They will also learn different ways that choreographers and dancers communicate and connect with each other in the dance community.

Presenter: Francis Vilar has been dancing and has been part of the McKinley Dance Club since his freshman year. As a McKinley Alumnus, Class of 2014, he has continuously made an effort to come back to the club as a mentor and, eventually, became the head coach for McKinley’s Varsity Division in the Honozulu Beast Dance Competition (an annual high school dance competition held in Hawai‘i). From there, he realized and acknowledged his passion for dance as an educator. Currently enrolled at UH Mānoa, he now aims to be a secondary school teacher focusing on dance. He believes that dance has already proven itself to be one of the most beneficial art-forms for the youths. One of his lifelong goals is to bring importance in dance to secondary education and, specifically, encourage high schools in Hawai‘i to include dance as part of their curriculum.

Our daily routine is to get out of bed, turn on the computer, and mute ourselves. Distance learning has made speaking up in front of others even more awkward and intimidating. Learn to find your voice again and the confidence in yourself to speak in a public setting, whether it be to a few people or an audience of hundreds. Although it does not feel like it right now, you can be certain that face-to-face interactions will return!

Presenter: Maiola Vivas is a Youth Pastor at One Love ministries. He has been public speaking and working with youth for the past 5 years.

TIGER TALK

The sessions below are informal with no set agenda. Just show up, talk story, and have fun with others who share your passion.

Monday, April 12 @ 2:00 PM

Are you a huge BTS fan? Or maybe you're just starting to figure out all the members' names? Either way, you can't miss this. Who has the nicest hair? Who has the best voice? How do they make their eyebrows like that? Which is the best song? This is where you can put your Blood, Sweat, and Tears into talking about how much you love BTS. Come and join the BTS Army! We want you!

Session Host: Ms. Jodi Fong has taught at McKinley High School for 24 years. Her daughter has been a BTS fan for many years and would talk about the members and use slang like stans, ARMY, bias and Ms. Fong had no idea what the heck she was talking about. Last March while on lockdown, she felt it was time to turn Mom into ARMY, with daily picture quizzes asking "Who is this?" until she finally got it right. They also spent time together playing their songs over and over. (Thank goodness they have so many or she might have gone batty). Together they celebrated their 7th birthday in June with cake and Bang Bang Con. Ms. Fong's bias is Jin and bias wrecker Jimin. Like many, her favorite song is Spring Day. She likes their songs mostly for relaxation, but also has their fast, upbeat songs on her running playlist. She says "COVID needs to be over so that I can attend a live concert =)."
