In 2020 while senior Drama students were studying Simon Stevens and his plays (Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, Punk Rock, and Sea Wall)... a little inspirational video emerged in a student's research presentation...
"Hello Maia, Hello Ms Fridd, Hello Ms Fridd’s students. It meant a great deal to get your message, Maia. It was a surprise, you know. I admire your persistence and imagination, determination, in finding my email. And thanks for writing to me.
It means a massive amount that Curious Incident and Seawall mean something to you.
I hope you’re well, I hope you’re safe, I hope you’re enjoying studying drama. I hope you’re aware of how fundamental to the survival of our species storytellers are going to be in the coming decade. And the role that you and your classmates and your teacher will play in that, helping us to define ourselves… as we recover from this curious catastrophe.
Ah, I’ve great faith in you. Keep writing. Keep being fearless in who you write to. Keep acting.
Ah and Ms Fridd, thanks very much. It means a lot that my plays resonate. Take care guys. I love New Zealand. Happiest, genuinely the happiest moments of my life have been spent in New Zealand. I really hope I get to go back there one day. Alright. Lots of love."

Oscar talks about the importance of storytelling as an art, and as a connecting element in society. “Maybe there’s something inbuilt, something that resonates in the stories that we keep telling about the human condition. Maybe it needs to be that way in order for people to learn from them.” - Kightley 2010 Big Idea
