new Zealand Youth Film Festival
Kia ora aspiring film makers! An exciting, new film festival has been announced - New Zealand Youth Film Festival. This festival was created to facilitate the lack of festivals that support students and young people in Aotearoa. Whilst we have the 48-Hour Film Festival, participants are limited to only 48-hours to make a film. This festival allows participants to make and submit whatever kind of film they like (no constraints). With the NZ film industry's international acclaim, it seems only natural a next step be to provide a legitimate stepping stone into the industry for aspiring film makers. You have to be at least 15 to enter, but get a team together and start creating now! This festival is here to stay for the long run.

JMC's first End of Year Arts Celebration! We had a wonderful time celebrating our art students' successes with friends, family, and faculty. We were lucky enough to have Arts alumni Tama Anthony-Whigham join us and share some wisdom with the boys. We enjoyed performances from Finlay Tomkins, Mitchell Lobb, the boys from Sué Chef, and Harold Gao. We are so excited to see what our Yr13 leavers get up to next! It's been a hard couple of years for the arts, but these boys have achieved so many great things regardless. Go team!

PLAYWRITING WORKSHOP with Prospect Park Production's Co-Founder EMILY DUNCAN
Yesterday Yr 11/12 Drama were lucky enough to have local playwright and Burns Fellow, Emily Duncan, come in today to run a playwriting workshop for their playwriting internal this term.
Emily is also a director, dramaturg and co-founder of Prospect Park Productions NZ, a local theatre production company we are very lucky to have here in Otēpoti.
JMC Drama have a longstanding history with Emily's work, having attended her Fringe show 'Le Sujet Parle' in 2019 at the Otago Museum and 'Eloise in the Middle' in 2018 at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery.
During the workshop today, Emily offered a series of prompt questions with 90 second time-frames to brainstorm, inviting students to become aware of their own innate creativity with no thoughts left uncovered or discouraged.
Local Artist bruno Willis's School Visit
Last week Yr 7 Finlay had the opportunity to interview local artist, set and costume designer/creator, Bruno Willis, for his HeadStart project on graffiti. Bruno has been commissioned by the DCC to do graffiti work around the city. He offered some interesting insight into graffiti's crossover into high art thanks to prolific artist Banksy, as well as the challenges and ironies faced as a commissioned artist, whose medium is often illegal. He also treated us to a quick show of an impromptu print which he did in less than 5 minutes, which was very exciting and inspiring for Finlay!
TheatreFest Success For JMC 2022
Congratulations to Finlay, Mitchell, Dana & Brie for their TheatreFest success over the weekend! Their Frankenstein scene won "Excellence in Design" & "Magic Moment" awards and they are off to Arrowtown in less than 2 weeks for Lower South Island Regionals!

Messages of Aroha - Arts Exhibition
The M.O.A project is a community creatives outreach task we undertook this year. We here in school performing arts departments recognise just how hard it's been on our industry creatives during the pandemic, we've also been feeling it too. Many shows and events, we'd usually be viewing or involved with, have either been postponed or cancelled. The last few years have been hugely frustrating and disruptive for our students.
Messages of Aroha was born out of a feeling we had to share love and support to those in our creative community who are feeling the effects of cancellations, postponements, and challenging circumstances. We reached out to other schools around Otago and gathered these messages to create the M.O.A booklet, something which can be shared within the creative community in Otago. We are hoping that this booklet lets artists know they are important and needed so that they might bear through their losses, and be here for us and us for them at the end of this tunnel.
The Fringe HQ has kindly offered to host our M.O.A project publicly in their 'White Box' exhibition space.

aRT SUCCESS FOR YR 10 eddie scott
Massive congratulations to Yr 10 Eddie Scott for being one of twelve artists (high school age - 24) selected for the DCC's new initiative Artist Advice Ōtepoti (AAŌ). His work will be displayed as a full-screen image on their new online hub's landing page for a whole month. He was paid $300 for his work - part of the initiative is providing paid opportunities for young artists. Artist labour (in all spheres of the arts) is often not recognised monetarily, we've seen this most recently for the arts community during covid with show cancellations and little to no compensation. So this is a great move on part of the DCC, and a wonderful, meaningful experience for Eddie!
jmc arts logo competition winner
Congratulations to Yr 9 Fynn Turner for being our JMC Arts logo competition winner! The competition was steep, with many awesome, artistic entries. However, Fynn's ended up being the right fit for what we need from a logo. His logo is now being further refined with Mr. McNulty, before making its debut here. Thank you to all participants for your entries! The artistic talent in this school is immense.

Two-time Billy T Award-nominated comedian James Mustapic has deep Abandonment Issues - all stemming from the public disappearance of iconic 2000s Kiwi celebrities that captivated him as a young queer boy in Dunedin.
James is on a mission to find those celebrities who are no longer in the limelight, and to see if he can either bring himself closure, or concoct a new scheme to help them re-capture the love of a nation.
New episodes landing weekly and made with the support of NZ On Air.

And they're developing quite the fan base - with millions of streams across Spotify and views on YouTube.
They've just released their third album - Looking for Space - and in these Covid times are currently on a sold-out world tour.
And they're currently in California - where lead singer and frontman Josh Mehrtens joined Mike Hosking.
