Talking to and supporting Kids during COVID-19
From our Guidance Counselors
Be Calm and reassuring:
Let them know that adults are taking care of their health and safety.
Explain that people who are sick can spread the virus by coughing and sneezing and this is why we cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze.
Also healthy people can get the virus when we touch something that a sick person has coughed or sneezed on and this is why we wash our hands carefully.
Know that the basis of their stress will be from wondering “am I safe?”
Children (like adults) are empowered when they know how to keep themselves healthy and safe.
Keep explanations age appropriate:
Younger children need brief, simple information that will balance the facts with proper reassurances that the adults in their lives are there to keep them healthy and safe.
Older children may be asking more questions about their safety as well as the safety of loved ones. They may need help clarifying rumor and misinformation.
Be aware of adult conversations:
In times of stress our children are very aware and will be listening to our conversations. Make sure the adult conversations they hear are keeping this in mind.
This includes limiting their exposure to news reports.
Be honest and accurate:
Know that in the absence of facts children will imagine situations far worse than reality.
