The Western North Carolina District Honor Band is an overnight clinic hosted by Western Carolina University in early to mid-February each year. The auditions take place in mid-January at Tuscola High School on a Saturday.
The WNC Bandmasters website has basic information about dates and locations.
The NC Bandmasters website includes links to copies of the audition solos, recordings of the solos performed by professionals, and the official scale sheets for each instrument.
Students are scored in three areas:
1) Scales - Six major scales in district rhythm, either one octave or two, all tongued, with an arpeggio.
Chromatic Scale - This includes all the notes within a certain range. Fingering charts are great for
practicing this (Google "[instrument] fingering chart")
2) Solo - Each instrument has a unique solo which can be found, along with recordings, at the links listed
above. This gives students a chance to show off their musical abilities of expression as well as their
technical abilities.
3) Sight-Reading - Students are given one silent minute to look at a short passage of music which is new
and previously unknown to them. They then perform the new piece once through.
