Welcome to the Reading Room!
To help your young reader DECODE or SOUND OUT tricky words, you can use two different techniques.
Decoding activating the Brain's Four Part Processing System
Decoding using the Beanie Baby Strategies
Look hard at all of the letters.
What sounds do those letters make?
Is that a word you know?
Does it make sense?
Eagle Eye-Look hard at the letters. Check the picture.
Lips the Fish-Get your lips and brain ready to say the sounds.
Crunchy Shark-"Crunch" through all of the sounds.
Chunky Monkey-Look for chunks you know. (Do-ing)
Flippy Dolphin-Try a new vowel sound. (Flip the Vowel)
Stretchy Snake-Stretch out the sounds and blend them back together.
Do not allow your child to overuse the last two Beanie Baby Strategies. You do not want him/her guessing.
Tryin' Lion-Try again.
Skippy Frog-Skip the word and read the rest of the sentence. Then, hop back to the beginning of the sentence and reread.
