1. When reading with your child, please do not make him or her "sound out" every tricky word. It is perfectly fine to just give a word. When you do this, make sure he or she goes back to the beginning of the sentence and rereads. Rereading will improve fluency and comprehension.

2. If you think your reader can successfully "sound out" a tricky word, use patience! It can be hard to resist the urge to give the word quickly. Your young reader needs time to think. The goal is for your child to independently use the decoding strategies. If your child begins to guess, please tell him or her the word. As previously stated, make sure your child goes back to the beginning of the sentence and rereads. Rereading is critical to building comprehension and fluency.

Eagle Eye-Look hard at the letters. Check the picture.
Lips the Fish-Get your lips and brain ready to say the sounds.
Crunchy Shark-"Crunch" through all of the sounds.
Chunky Monkey-Look for chunks you know. (Do-ing)
Flippy Dolphin-Try a new vowel sound. (Flip the Vowel)
Stretchy Snake-Stretch out the sounds and blend them back together.
Do not allow your child to overuse the last two Beanie Baby Strategies. You do not want him/her guessing.
Tryin' Lion-Try again.
Skippy Frog-Skip the word and read the rest of the sentence. Then, hop back to the beginning of the sentence and reread.
