Before reading with your child, take the time to activate background knowledge.

-make predictions based on the title, cover, illustration, summary on the back or inside cover, type of genre
- give your reader time to talk about what he/she already knows about a nonfiction book's topic, fiction book's characters, setting, author, or genre
-complete a picture walk by going though the book looking at & discussing illustrations and any text features

CAUTION: Do not over question, keep it simple! :)

As you check your reader's understanding, think of a traffic light as he/she responds to your questions.
Green- Go! Your child understands and can keep on reading.
Yellow-Slow Down! Your child understands; but needs a little help.
Red-Stop! Your child doesn't understand. Go back to the beginning of the page, reread, and help him/her to "fix-up" misconceptions.
Your child can also use this as a self-reflection!

Students of all ages love journaling. You can do this at home, too! Simply have your child pick out a special notebook, crayons, and a favorite pencil. Then, after reading, have your child draw pictures and/or write about the story.
