Lakeview Elementary has a solid and broad base of community partners in areas from computer science to agriculture and farming and everything inbetween. New partners continue to embrace the school and its students and want to be a part of the culture of STEM learning. For example, as a new solar field is installed next to the school, students will have the opportunity to engage with and learn about alternative forms of energy. In addition, Monroe County Community School Corporation (MCCSC) values STEM education and provides several opportunities for all students to engage in STEM learning after school, in the evenings, and on weekends.
Lakeview Elementary is committed to building and nurturing partnerships with community organizations. These collaborations, which include Indiana University, local businesses like Veregy, and national organizations like the US Forestry Department, are designed to enhance the teaching and learning of STEM subjects. By providing real-world applications, hands-on experiences, and access to experts or specialized resources, these partnerships not only enrich students' understanding of STEM but also reassure parents, educators, and community members of the practical benefits of our initiatives, instilling a sense of confidence in our approach.
Lakeview Elementary is dedicated to enhancing STEM education to help students understand that careers in STEM extend beyond just being a scientist or mathematician. Through engaging, hands-on STEM activities, students are exposed to various professions, including healthcare, environmental science, technology, design, and even entrepreneurship. These experiences aim to inspire students by demonstrating how STEM skills are applied in the real world. When students see how the lessons they are learning can solve problems and create innovative solutions in careers that interest them, they become more engaged and motivated.
At Lakeview, STEM education is integrated across all grade levels and subjects (e.g. ELA, Math), connecting to science, computer science, and the broader STEM curriculum. Students engage in STEM and STEM-to-Nature lessons that incorporate hands-on projects, data collection, and real-world problem-solving. STEM is also embedded into special area classes such as art, music, and physical education, fostering creativity and technical skills. The school emphasizes project-based learning (PBL), where students collaborate on interdisciplinary projects that align with the Engineering Design model and apply STEM concepts. Teachers receive ongoing professional development, and the school partners with local businesses and organizations to enhance learning. This holistic approach promotes critical thinking, creativity, and real-world application of STEM knowledge.
Equity is a top priority at MCCSC and serves as a guiding principle in our strategic plan, influencing our educational practices and policies. MCCSC is committed to ensuring that all students—regardless of their background or circumstances—have equal access to resources, support, and opportunities for success. This commitment includes providing an inclusive curriculum, equitable access to technology, and extracurricular activities that support underrepresented groups such as students of color, low-income students, and English language learners. At Lakeview Elementary, we promote equity by creating an environment where all students are equipped with the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.
