By the late 1700s, the British Empire had set foot within the subcontinent. The British East India Company signed treaties with various Indian maharajas, or princes, who gave the British economic advantages and political power. After the fall of the Mughal Empire, the British Empire began to demonstrate their strength throughout the region.
Eventually, in 1858, the British had fully colonized the region and had a major impact on the government. At first, the people were happy with the fact that the British introduced modern technology to manufacture goods such as textiles, and they also built railways to facilitate trade. The British also established schools, universities as well as a Western concept of democracy.
