Concept of an adolescent identity crisis- This event takes place between ages 12 - 18 years old and involves the adolescent making decisions about their life roles. They question their sense of self or place in the world
The theories and research behind identity crisis- The fifth stage in Erik Erikson's theory is called ego identity vs. role diffusion. At this stage, the adolescent begins to develop ego identity. They are faced with making choices for what's best for their future...religion, occupation, gender role, political beliefs, and more.
James Marcia built on Erikson's theory, Marcia theorized 4 identity statuses that represent a combination of what an adolescent might be experiencing through exploration and commitment. Erikson believed exploration and commitment were critical to the development of identity. The 4 identity stages are identity diffusion, foreclosure, moratorium, and identity achievement.
Erikson's theory on adolescent identity crisis and what happens if it isn't resolved? Erikson believed the growth and formation of an adolescent didn't just stop at age 18. He claimed that it continues to change throughout one's life as he/she experiences new challenges and problems in their life. If an identity crisis isn't resolved, Erikson thought that depression, suicide, anxiety are issues involved with an unresolved identity crisis. Those who do not resolved their crisis may be intolerant of people who are different and may follow those who adhere to convention, they can have difficulty committing to relationships or jobs, and lack self confidence.
Identity vs. Role Confusion- During this stage, children are transforming into adolescents. Trying to find themselves and what they want out of life. They ask themselves, "who am I?"
Identity- Makes up a person's sense of self. Relationships, beliefs, experiences, values, etc. define a person's self. This can change through a persons lifespan.
Role Confusion- This is a state of confusion or uncertainty about a person's role and what they believe in or where they fit it. If an adolescent isn't allowed to explore, it can result being unsure of who he/she is.
Ways to get through identity crisis is looking for area's your strong in, then build on those strengths. Don't be afraid to try new things, participate in activities related in your interests. Don't limit yourself from trying different religions, group activities, shadow someone in a field of interest. Exploring is endless and you never know what you may find.
