Milestones in language acquisition-
1) Pre-linguistic stage: takes place in the first month of an infant's life. At this stage, the infant does not have developed language skills, so they cry to communicate.
2) Cooing stage: Cooing occurs around 1 to 2 months of age. The sounds are vowel like are linked to feelings of pleasure. An infant will often coo when happy or responding to a caregiver talking to them. When the infant is hungry, tired, hurt, etc., it does not coo, but will cry.
2) Babbling stage: These are the first noise's made that wound human like. The infant will form works combining consonants and vowels like da, ba, etc. For a 6 - 12 month old, babbling takes up half of their non-crying sounds.
3) Holophrase stage: This stage happens as early as 11 months of age. The child's language has now developed enough for them to say single words that describe objects or can identify a need. At this stage, when a child say's "dada", the child is trying to get his Dad's attention. A naming explosion of about 50 words happens around 16 months and 320 words around 24 months.
5) Telegraphic stage: At about 24 months of age the child can speak in phrases. The child might say, "Doggie outside" at this stage. Correct grammar isn't prevalent yet, but you can understand what the child is trying to tell you. At this stage, the child can also understand basic instructions, for i.e.: "go get your car from your toy box".
6) Full sentence stage: The last stage the child begins to use full sentences. They can build complex sentences now to better communicate.
