MISD Counseling Guidance Mission Statement: McAllen ISD guidance and counseling program promotes student success through a focus on academic achievement, prevention and intervention activities, advocacy, emotional intelligence, and career development. Our mission is to provide an intentional, equitable, and data-informed school counseling program where students become competent, resilient, and responsible individuals.
Definition: Professional School Counselors within McAllen ISD are dedicated to delivering a program that aligns with both the Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling and the American School Counseling Association (ASCA). This comprehensive approach encompasses academic development, career development, and social-emotional development to impact student growth.
Our counseling programs are data-driven, allowing us to discern student needs accurately. Through a range of interventions, including school counseling guidance lessons, individual and group sessions, and closing-the-gap strategies, we aim to foster development in these critical areas.
A significant facet of our efforts involves collaboration with all students participating in a campus-wide emotional intelligence initiative. This initiative focuses on key components such as self-regulation, self-awareness, empathy, motivation, and social skills. Furthermore, counselors actively engage with parents through the Emotional Intelligence Weekly Family Connection activity. This joint effort ensures that both students and parents are immersed in learning the essential elements of emotional intelligence.
Rationale: Professional School Counselors at McAllen ISD uphold the belief that every student is entitled to equitable access to a high-quality education within a secure and accepting environment designed to nurture the learning process. They are firm in their conviction that all students can thrive when positive relationships are cultivated and endorsed by every educational stakeholder, contributing to a safe, nurturing, and inclusive educational environment.

Evaluating our Program Goals
The counselor will consistently reassess SMART goals to ensure that both student and campus needs are being effectively addressed. A keen awareness and understanding of data enable the counselor to verify that program goals align seamlessly with campus requirements. Supplementary data points, such as attendance records, discipline referrals, and pre/post surveys from students, parents, and teachers, contribute to a comprehensive evaluation.
Meetings with the Counseling Advisory Committee serve as a valuable forum for gaining insights into the effectiveness of interventions and programs that have been implemented. This continuous monitoring and evaluation process allows for timely adjustments to ensure the counseling program remains responsive and impactful.
