Events & Traditions
The IB Program at Lamar Academy has several of its own unique traditions/events that exist to help create a culture of unity among students and staff. Each IB cohort/class at Lamar Academy is given a Greek name that the class goes by as they move through the program. It is a tradition that was established to create class comradery, unity, and identity. The first diploma programme class to graduate from the IB Program at Lamar Academy was the Alpha class of 2003. Classes move through grades and are recognized as freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, but they will always be their class Greek name even after they graduate.
New ninth-grade students are invited to attend a campus orientation/social the week before school starts. During the orientation, students receive a tour of the campus, learn how to understand their block course schedule, meet their teachers, attend a club/organization fair, meet their classmates, etc. This is the first opportunity for the freshmen to bond as a class.
This day is time scheduled the week prior to classes starting in August for students to come to campus to meet with some members of the faculty to ask questions about summer reading or IB assessments they are preparing for the coming year.
This is hosted by the 9th grade class each spring. Students formulate teams to participate in a series of games and activities and complete for the Phoenix Games trophy. (Phoenix Games participants must be current IB students.)
iBall is the costume/masquerade dance that traditionally occurs in January/February. It is hosted by the 10th grade class for all IB students to attend, and it is held in the Lamar Academy gymnasium. It is the primary 10th grade class fundraiser. (iBall is for current IB students only.)
Phoenix Fest is an annual event held in November where students invite their parent(s)/guardian(s) to join them for lunch on campus. It is a way for our families to connect together and meet each other.
Students who complete all of the requirements of the MYP and meet certificate requirements to advance to the DP attend an in-school MYP Certificate Celebration where they receive the MYP Certificate and reflect on their class achievements in the MYP. The official MYP transcript/certificates arrive in the fall after their 10th grade year. Families and students are invited to the presentation once it is scheduled after the certificates are received each fall.
This is a fun traditional competition between the classes. Students show their class spirit the week of the tournament by participating in spirit days and decorating a hallway the day of the games. A team of boys, from each class, plays to represent their class while a group of girls participate as coaches. Faculty is involved by being game referees and sometimes providing tournament entertainment. This event is during the school day and is for IB students and staff only.
This high school tradition is in addition to the home school prom, which students may also attend. It is hosted by the juniors as one of their class fundraisers. The prom is for IB juniors and seniors and their guests. The IB Prom is held either in the month of April or after IB exams are complete. (Guests must be approved by the administration two days prior to prom.)
Prior to the start of IB exams, Lamar Academy holds Decision Day events for student college decisions. Part of the celebration includes them receiving a good luck acorn that is a symbol of wisdom, patience, and achievement. Students traditionally carry the acorns with them to their IB Papers. (This event is for IB seniors and staff.)
The evening of the last day of IB exams, the senior class traditionally has a celebratory event that is for them and the faculty. It is traditionally hosted by the seniors themselves. The seniors sign yearbooks, the IB Learner Profile Awards are given, and they have a chance to say goodbye to their teachers while having fun together one last time.
IB Pinning is a ceremony held the last week of school to celebrate the diploma candidates who have completed all of the requirements of the IB curriculum. Pinning is an award ceremony for the year 2 DP students; it is not a graduation. Students wear their official IB regalia and receive the official IB Pin during the ceremony.
