All MYP courses meet the guidelines and criterion of the subject group requirements for the IB Middle Years Programme for the IB World Schools. MYP course work is rigorous and prepares students for the college-level courses of the Diploma Programme. NOTE: These advanced courses also serve the identified gifted/talented students.

MYP Language & Literature Year 5 (10th) REQUIRED
Students select one of two language tracks for 9th and 10th grade to prepare for either the Spanish B or Spanish Language & Literature track for the diploma programme. Students wishing to pursue the IB Bilingual Diploma should follow the MYP Spanish Language & Literature track.

MYP Chemistry (9th or 10th)
MYP Physics (9th or 10th)
To be on-track for DP mathematics courses, students need to complete Algebra II prior to 11th grade. Therefore, it may be necessary for some students to take two mathematics courses during the 10th grade year.

IB 9th & 10th Grade (MYP Years 4 & 5)
Students enrolled in the MYP at Lamar Academy are working toward earning their MYP Certificate at the end of 10th grade. Students must earn the MYP Certificate to advance into the DP for 11th and 12th grade. The MYP is a two-year program, which means subjects and requirements build upon each other. Students may apply to enter for either 9th or 10th grade; however, 10th grade students will be required to meet specific additional requirements during year 5 of MYP to earn the MYP Certificate.
The MYP curriculum includes 8 course groups. Students must be enrolled in the following 5 subject groups:
Language & Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, and Mathematics.
Students must also be enrolled in one of the following remaining subjects: Design, Visual Arts, Physical Health and Education.
Students are encouraged to enroll in all 8 subject groups when their academic goals allow.
In addition to the subject course work, students must complete a set number of MYP Service experiences. Action and service are shared values of the IB community and support the development of the IB Learner Profile Attributes.
Students must complete 10 MYP Service experiences over two years, and 3 of the experiences must be curriculum related. Each of these experiences should support a learning outcome. A MYP Service Coordinator is available to guide and oversee this requirement.
If a student enters the program during MYP Year 5 (10th grade), they must complete 5 MYP Service experiences during the year, 1 of them must be curriculum related, and they will create and organize 1 MYP Service opportunity for their peers to participate in during the year.
All MYP service requirements MUST be completed by April 30th each year for a student to be eligible for the MYP Certificate and to be in good standing to proceed to the Diploma Programme. MYP Service cannot be counted until the student's first enrolled school day in August.
Another requirement of the MYP is the Personal Project.
Students must complete the project during their 10th grade year and are required to receive an MYP score of 3 or higher (scale of 1-7) as a passing score from their Personal Projects supervisor.
Completing and passing of the personal project is a requirement to earn the MYP certificate and to be able to advance on to the diploma programme.
Students who do not attend the MYP but apply for the DP submit a research-based project/paper and proof of extra-curricular and service involvement as part of their DP application.
The final component to the MYP is the MYP Records of Achievement. Students must receive a minimum overall grade of 3 (scale of 1-8) in all of their MYP subjects at the end of 9th and 10th grade to qualify for the MYP Certificate. Students who do not pass the RofA are in danger of being dismissed from the program.
Preparing students for success in higher education and to be active participants in a global society (IBO, 2015).
11th & 12th Grade (DP Yrs 1 & 2)
Students enrolled in the DP at Lamar Academy are working toward earning their IB Diploma at the end of 12th grade. Students who are in-good academic standing and earn the MYP Certificate are automatically enrolled into DP. (Students who do not attend the MYP but apply for the DP submit a research-based project/paper and proof of extra-curricular and service involvement as part of their DP application.)
Like the MYP, the DP is a two-year program; the DP courses are two-year courses taught by a team of teachers or the same teacher over two years. Because the courses and required IB assessments span over two consecutive years, students can only enroll in the DP at Lamar Academy for 11th grade. (Twelfth grade students can only be considered if they are transferring from another IB/MYP World School programme that matches the course-work at Lamar Academy.)
The DP curriculum includes 6 course groups. Students must be enrolled in 6 courses and TOK Yr1 & 2 to earn the IB Diploma. Students are required to take one course from the first 5 IB subject groups, and they may choose to take a course in subject group six, the Arts, or an additional subject in groups 1-5 as their sixth course.
