Nora Sanchez serves as the Head of School and Principal of Lamar Academy, bringing 35 years of experience in education to her leadership role. Now in her 17th year at Lamar Academy, Mrs. Sanchez began her journey at the campus in 2009 as the Testing Coordinator before serving as Assistant Principal for ten years. She holds a Master’s degree in Educational Administration from Lamar University.
A proud alumna of Lamar Academy—back when it was still a junior high—Mrs. Sanchez considers the school her lifelong home and strives to ensure that every student feels the same sense of belonging and pride. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys spending time with her grandchildren and her beloved dog, Bandit.

Rachelle Downey is a veteran educator with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Education from the University of Kansas and a Master’s of Curriculum & Instruction from the University of Texas at Arlington. With over thirty years in the field of education, Mrs. Downey taught English for twenty-five years in 9-12 grades and was also an adjunct lecturer at the university level; she is currently the Assistant Principal at Lamar Academy and has been the IB Coordinator for the past six years. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two dogs and watching college basketball. She is committed to creating a supportive and inspiring learning environment and looks forward to partnering with students and families to achieve student success.

Joanna Zuniga holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction with a Science Emphasis. She began her career in education in 2013 as a high school science teacher, teaching biology and physics. Her dedication to student success and equity led her to transition into her current role as a Testing Coordinator, now entering her fourth year. As a former migrant student, she brings a personal understanding of the challenges many students face and is a strong advocate for educational access for all, regardless of background. Her philosophy centers on the belief that every student deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive. Outside of her professional work, she enjoys exploring local coffee shops and getting lost in a good book.
Ms. Ariana Guel

Ariana Guel holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, a Master’s in Public Administration from UTRGV, and a Master’s in Library Science from Sam Houston State University. With over 16 years of service in education, she has taught Practicum in Marketing, Business & Capstone classes and now serves as the Librarian for Lamar Academy & UTRGV Collegiate Academy. Outside of work, Ariana enjoys reading and staying active. She is a proud mother of a son who will be attending The University of Texas at Austin and a devoted dog mom to two lovable furbabies. Ariana’s educational philosophy centers on the belief that the library is the heart of the school—open, welcoming, and integral to student success—fostering academic, social, and personal growth for all learners.
Naomi Abiro

Nurse Abiro is a Licensed Vocational Nurse with five years of experience in healthcare. She is dedicated to promoting student health, wellness, and education. She began her nursing career in pediatric home health and in the medical-surgical department, at a local hospital where she built a strong foundation in patient-centered care.
Beyond nursing, she enjoys hobbies such as planting and expressing her creativity through crafting. She also loves embracing both her Hispanic and Nigerian heritage and culture with her family. She believes education should empower students with knowledge, confidence, and compassion to succeed in and beyond the classroom.
Ms. Rebecca Lerma

Rebecca Lerma is the school counselor at Lamar Academy. She has a Bachelor's Degree in English from UTRGV and a Master's degree in School Counseling from UT Tyler. She has 16 years in education, eight years teaching English before transitioning into school counseling, where she has served for another eight years. She earned the title of District Counselor of the Year for McAllen ISD during the 23-24 school year. In her free time, she enjoys practicing yoga and crocheting. Rebecca is passionate about supporting students and believes every student should be empowered to grow and reach their goals.

Mrs. Nunez is the College Specialist at Lamar Academy with 20 years of experience in education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from UTRGV and a master’s in School Counseling from Lamar University. Named McAllen ISD’s 2024–2025 Counselor of the Year, she is passionate about ensuring all students have access to the resources needed for the college application journey. An alumna of the New Leader Council, South Texas Frontera Chapter, she also volunteers her time leading free college application workshops in the community.

Christina Calvillo holds a Bachelor of Science in Advertising from The University of Texas at Austin. She brings eighteen years of experience in education. Throughout her career, she has taught special education, first grade, and various levels of high school. She is deeply committed to meeting the diverse needs of students and finds joy in being an empathetic influence on those she encournters. Outside of the classroom, she enjoys reading contemporary fiction, obsessing over her three dogs, and traveling for adventure. She is a sports fanatic and will always root for her UT Longhorns, Houston Texans, and Houston Astros. When it comes to education, she believes that all students thrive when they feel seen, supported, and challenged to grow both academically and personally.

Araceli Guzman graduated from University of Texas Pan-American with a Bachelor's and Master's degree in English Literature and a Master's in Library Science from Texas Women's University. She has been teaching writing and reading to high school students for 18 years and has also taught writing at the local college. Her passion lies in exploring how stories shape our understanding of ourselves and the world. Outside the classroom, she is an avid reader and enjoys watching movies with her husband and two children, spending time with her two dogs, Brownie and Peanut, and running. Her educational philosophy centers on the belief that literature is a powerful tool for personal growth and social change striving to empower students to think critically, find their voice, and become agents of transformation through the texts they explore together.

Mr. Daniel Castillo has been an English teacher since 2008. He holds both a BA and MA in English from UTPA (University of Texas Pan-American). He has taught a wide range of English courses that include AP and dual enrollement courses. He currently is the English YR 5 teacher. Mr. Castillo believes teaching is about empowering students to think critically, communicate effectively, and discover their voice through writing and literature. In his time off, Mr. Castillo enjoys spending time with his son and wife and, if possible, riding his bike.

Juan Ozuna graduated from Yale University with a degree in English. After working as a newspaper reporter and educational non-profit director, he was inspired to move full-time into the classroom. As the 9th grade MYP Year 4 English teacher, he now motivates young learners to fully appreciate the art and skills of reading and writing. Additionally, he also shares his passion for creativity and film-making as the sponsor of the IB Phoenix Media Club. A lifelong reader, writer, and content creator, Mr. Ozuna loves taking photos, making videos, and spending time with his family going on trips and outdoor adventures. He believes he that teaching is a powerful form of community development and a way to help empower the next great generation of leaders.

Ofmara Martinez is a native of Rio Bravo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. She graduated from the University of Texas - Pan American (currently UTRGV) with a Bachelor's in Spanish in 2008 and a Master's in Spanish Literature in 2014. In her previous 17 years of teaching, Mrs. Martinez has served as a Department Head, has sponsored Freshmen Class, Spanish Club, Student Council, and Spanish Spelling Bee, where her students have placed 1st (2024) and 2nd (2023 & 2025) at the district level and 1st place in region competition (2023). She has experience as a Spanish Monolingual & Bilingual teacher, AP teacher, Dual Credit teacher, and currently serves as IB teacher for the Diploma Programme at Lamar Academy. Her goal is to create and provide a safe and inviting environment, where her students feel engaged and enjoy leaning a second language. Mrs. Martinez enjoys spending time with her family and traveling.

Mrs. De Los Santos is originally from San Cristóbal, Venezuela. She graduated from the University of Texas-Pan American (now UTRGV) as the 2012 Outstanding Graduate from the Communications Department. With 11 years of teaching experience, Mrs. De Los Santos is now in her fourth year at Lamar Academy. In 2017, she was honored as Memorial Middle School’s Teacher of the Year. At Lamar, her goal is to facilitate language learning as defined by the IB program—an iterative process that develops through inquiry in increasingly broad contexts and progressively deeper reading.

Eunice Fuentevilla-García, a native of Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico, immigrated to the United States in 1992 after completing her education in her home country at the age of 18. She
pursued higher education at UTPA, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. Mrs. García launched her teaching career in 1998 at Nikki Rowe High School, where she taught Spanish 1-3 Bilingual. For the past 19 years, she has been a dedicated educator for MYP years 4 and 5. Beyond the curriculum, Mrs. García focuses on teaching students how to think critically and understand the importance of this skill. Her caring nature and love for teaching are evident in her belief that every child has the potential to learn. Mrs. García enjoys spending time with her family, which includes two sisters and a brother. She has been happily married for 28 years and loves to travel with her husband. Alexander Reed is a professional educator now starting his fourteenth year as a high school teacher. Although Mr. Reed has taught at IB Lamar for the past ten years, Mr. Reed actually began his IB career in 2001 as part of the program's first graduating class (go Alphas!). Now on the other side of the teacher's desk, Mr. Reed now teaches IB History HL to juniors and seniors, and he also serves as the IB Lamar Social Studies department head. Mr. Reed has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowdoin College, a Master of Education degree from Loyola University Chicago, and a Master of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University. When he is not in the classroom, Mr. Reed enjoys building computers, writing fiction, and going on adventures with his wife and kids.

Mr. Davila holds a BA in Social Studies ('06) and a Masters in Public Administration ('13) from the University of Texas - Pan American (UTRGV). Entering his 20th year in education, Mr. Davila has taught all subjects in Social Studies including AP Human Geography, AP World History, AP Government, AP Microeconomics. He currently teaches IB History of the Americas and IB Psychology at Lamar Academy. The core of Mr. Davila's teaching philosophy is to build a supportive, caring learning environment to encourage all students to become the best person they can be. Hobbies include chess and taking long walks in the park with his wife and 2 dogs, Luna and Snoopy.

She earned her B.A. in Sociology from Texas A&M University in 2014 and has since dedicated her career to helping students make meaningful connections between the past and the present. In the classroom, she believes in the power of education to help students understand the world around them and their place within it. Her goal is to create a supportive environment that fosters critical thinking and civic awareness. Beyond the classroom, she has served as a sponsor for Student Council, Mock Trial, Citizen Bee, and FLARE, always encouraging students to engage with their community. Mr. Cuestas serves as the MYP Human Geography teacher at Lamar Academy. He earned his bachelor’s degree in history, graduating summa cum laude from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. With approximately one year of teaching experience, Mr. Cuestas previously worked at an institution dedicated to training first responders. He is an enthusiastic reader, particularly drawn to science fiction and historical literature, and is also a passionate collector of international currency. Mr. Cuestas firmly believes that education is the cornerstone of progress and that individuals from all backgrounds have the potential to achieve their goals.

With extensive experience teaching Diploma Biology HL & SL, Chemistry and Biology in the MYP, and Middle School Biology, he brings a comprehensive and thoughtful approach to science education. Jose has proudly led the Science Olympiad team for the past seven years and serves as the Senior Student Council Sponsor—roles that reflect his commitment to fostering academic excellence and leadership in students. For the past 11 years, Mrs. Escobedo has been a dedicated teacher at Lamar Academy, where she plays an integral role in supporting students both inside and outside the classroom. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she serves as the IB Yearbook Sponsor and the Business Professionals of America (BPA) advisor, guiding students through leadership development, technical skills, and real-world experiences. Mrs. Escobedo is passionate about helping students harness technology effectively and responsibly to enhance their learning and prepare for the digital demands of the future. Throughout his career, he has served as a classroom teacher and program leader (Skills USA and BPA). Currently, Mr. De Rueda serves as the MYP Year 4 FBCT/Transition teacher. Outside of work, Mr. De Rueda enjoys golfing and enjoying time with his family at the beach. His educational philosophy centers on empowering every learner through culturally responsive teaching that builds resilience, curiosity, and community.
