For U.S. citizens applying for financial aide in the U.S., start with the FAFSA form.  This is a form that is completed concerning a families finances and is used to determine federal aid and financial aid that universities can offer students.  For more information see https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa   

Also talk with university admissions offices about other financial aid opportunities specific to their school.

Some U.S. colleges and universities may also ask students and parent to complete the College Board CSS Profile.   So, why the additional financial form?  The FAFSA is used by universities to determine how much federal aid a student may receive.  The colleges and universities that ask for the CSS Profile use the information to determine how much financial aid can be awarded to the student from that school itself.
