I Used To...

(Rethinking Learning Activities)

Run a Written Test

Now I could....

  • Set up a Desmos activity or assignment, requiring students to model , describe or evaluate a mathematical process or data

  • Get students to use Screencastify to record themselves responding to seen or unseen questions

  • Given a set of questions that move from Surface to Transfer learning, have a recorded conversation with a student (using Meet) where they can respond via voice and/or sharing their screen (Slides, Jamboard, etc.)

  • Explain their understanding using Explain Everything and record their voice, an example of this in Maths can be found here

Conduct an Experiment

Now I could...

  • Get students to run an experiment at home using common household substances

  • Get students to use a simulator (eg. PhET) to simulate an experiment and collect experimental results

  • Use the Google Science Journal app to record experimental data (including: light, sound, acceleration, linear motion)

  • Get students to document their local environment for a time period, using students' observations, photos, science journal

  • Film an experiment and provide students with a copy of the video. Students can then document their observed method, observations and results.

  • Students use video analysis to analyse experiment data and evaluate experimental procedures based on results and video observations

Carry out a Practical Activity

Now I could...

  • Get students to do the activity at home using basic household equipment

  • Get students to document and record a journal of observations/changes using photos and written observations

  • Students watch an online video or experience a virtual expeditions

  • Students photograph or film themselves doing the practical activity at home

  • Students reserach alternative situations or experiences of other people around the world

  • Get students to document their local environment for a time period, using students' observations, photos, science journal

  • Film an activity (cooking/playing a sport) and provide students with a copy of the video. Students can then document their observed techniques, method and observations

  • Students use video analysis to analyse record videos or online videos to identify and evaluate procedures and techniques used by professionals

Write a Text Response

Now I could...

Give an Oral Presentation

Now I could...

  • Get students to use Screencastify to record a short video of them presenting on a topic

  • Use Google Slides to develop a presentation and record themselves talking about the presentation

  • Use Google Meet to have an oral discussion about a topic

Provide Direct Instruction

Now I could...
