Being able to communicate in more than one language opens a world of possibilities for the future. Language learners are valuable members of society because of their ability to move between different cultures comfortably - and learning one language makes it so much easier to learn other languages in the future. In Year 10 Japanese, we learn how to communicate our own ideas about a range of topics including families, our interests, and our daily lives. We also learn how to order food in restaurants, and how to ask for and buy things in shops. This will come in handy if you choose to join us on a senior student trip to Japan! Everyone learns in different ways and students in Year 10 Japanese use a range of learning activities such as games in pairs and groups, role plays, using online language apps, learning songs, making posters, and much more, in a classroom environment that’s friendly and fun, and where everyone understands that we learn to communicate by experimenting and daring to step outside our comfort zones.

In Year 10 Māori, we will learn how the cultural purpose of pepeha, whakapapa, waiata, karakia, kai and others, connect us with information about our personal lives, our families and our surroundings and origins. We will extend our knowledge of traditional Māori society, tikanga & te ao Māori by visiting sites of cultural significance both locally and outside the district. In Māori we use a number of learning contexts to explore Māori culture and language, such as traditional games and pastimes, waka migrations, traditional narratives and technologies, visual and performing arts, and more. We will develop confidence and independence in language learning through engagement with online apps, pair and group activities, learning waiata, designing static images, playing traditional games, developing home-learning routines, to name a few.

Are you keen to study Spanish or French? Have you proven that you have excellent self-management skills and are able to work well independently? Then you may wish to explore learning languages online through Te Kura - The Correspondence School.
These are courses for beginners (Curriculum Levels 1–5). You will be introduced to basic listening, speaking, reading and writing skills using everyday Spanish or French. You learn how to greet people and communicate basic information about yourself and others including looks, hobbies, birthdays, family and your home.
You also learn to communicate about food, shopping and countries, as well as investigating Hispanic or French culture, giving you a broad understanding of the different countries where Spanish or French is spoken, and their customs. Communication activities are emphasised throughout.
This course is accessed online through My Te Kura. You will be required to make and submit audio and/or video recordings, so a microphone and camera or mobile device are essential. Although Ms Evans is able to provide some support and guidance for your language learning, you will be working largely independently.
