Early intervention home visits are designed to support children ages 0-3 after showing delays or a disability on an evaluation. The visits happen at home or another familiar environment. The visits last approximately 45 minutes and consist of family members and providers on the child's early intervention team.
The goal of a visit is to demonstrate strategies, observe the child's skills and support caregivers in helping their child practice new skills.
Early intervention visits are interactive and family-centered. Providers encourage caregivers to participate so strategies can be used throughout the child's daily life. Visits may look different depending on the child's goals and family needs but most visits will include a check-in with caregiver, observation and modeling strategies. Discussion can include progress the child has been making, planning activities the family can do or learning more about the family's goals.
Families are encouraged to be present and participate during the visit. It is helpful to minimize distractions when possible. This can include turning off the TV, silencing phones and putting pets in another room. Our team comes with no judgement, do not feel like you have to clean or 'prepare' your home for our visit.
Caregiver involvement is a key part of early intervention, children learn best from the people they interact with everyday. If comfortable, caregivers can practice strategies modeled for them during visits.
Sometimes, a visit may need to be cancelled or rescheduled to ensure the health, safety and effectiveness of services. A visit will be cancelled or rescheduled if any of the following happen:
A person in the home or a provider is ill
School is delayed/cancelled or there are unsafe travel conditions
Family/provider emergencies or schedule conflicts
Child sleeping or unavailable during the scheduled visit time
