The evaluation takes place in the child’s natural environment (home or childcare setting). Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process and provide information about the child’s daily routines, strengths, and areas of concern!
The district requires written consent to move forward with an evaluation. The evaluation can be a combination of observation, direct testing, and parent interview.
The evaluation will include gathering information on all five areas of development. This includes cognition, motor, adaptive, social and communication skills. Are you only concerned about communication skills? In early development, concerns in one area of development carry over into another. Communication delays can impact social or cognitive skills too! This is why it's important to gather information on all areas of development.
After the evaluation is complete, including receiving paperwork from caregivers, a meeting will be held to discuss the results. A written report will also be given. Children qualify for services by showing a delay in one or more areas of development.
You will work with your child’s team to develop an Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) that outlines goals for your child and the services that will support your child and family. The plan is written for a year, progress is monitored and updated as your child grows.
An initial home visit will be scheduled.
If a child does not meet eligibility criteria, the team will hold a meeting to go through evaluation results.
Additional resources and suggestions may be given by the team to further support your child’s development. See the resources page for more information.
