I did what I promised, we are kind of late but I put the stats of the Bristol Eagles and all of the other baseball teams in the 5 towns. Bristol is in first with a record of 8-2, the second place team Monkton, they are 6-4, third place Starksboro is 5-5 and last and but not least, Lincoln with a record of 2-8. If you are wondering why there is no New Haven team, it is because there were not enough players to make a full team. The Curler Cup started last week, and the first round game is against Lincoln. They won with Jaran G. starting pitching. The next game was also last week and we beat Starksboro which automatically makes us in the finals!
Go Eagles!!!

Softball
I interviewed the softball coach Marc and asked him a few questions.
I asked Marc: Why did you start a softball team?
He said, “Well, I didn’t actually start it. There’s always a softball team around here, but this year there were not enough players for any of the towns involved (Bristol, Lincoln, New Haven, Monkton) to have their own team so we combined them.”
I asked Marc: When did you start coaching softball?
Marc said, “I started coaching about ten years ago when my oldest daughter was seven.”
I asked Marc if his team has had any games and if so what happened?
Marc said, “We’ve had five games and they’ve gone pretty well. Most of them have been competitive. Most importantly, we’ve improved every game!”
I asked Marc if it’s hard or easy being a softball coach.
Marc said, “There are some challenging things like keeping track of everything and getting the schedule all worked out so we don’t have situations like the other night when we couldn’t play under the lights! Coaching this year has been a little more challenging than usual because we have such a wide range of kids on the team. We have 10 year-olds who have never played along with 12 year-olds who have played for years. I’ve had to teach at a lot of different levels with this team and I’ve never had to do that before.”
For people that don’t know much about softball I asked Marc: How does the game work?
He said, “Pretty much like baseball, except for the underhand pitching, which is really hard to do. Obviously, the field is smaller so it can be a really fast game when the teams are good. And sometimes there’s tons of “small balls” because if you just get the ball on the ground you can often beat it out first.”
Another question I asked Marc was if he played softball before he coached.
Marc said that he didn't do fastpitch. “It’s kind of interesting that most of the male coaches have never actually played the game. There are elite fastpitch men’s leagues and they play in the Pan-Am Games, but you don’t run into those guys that often. It seems like men’s fastpitch softball was more popular in the 1960s than it is now and it also seems to be more popular in certain areas of the country.”
I asked Marc: What do you like about coaching softball?
He said, “Well, it’s really fun to be around the team and it’s great to see the kids learn the game. It’s also nice to think that you’re helping kids develop a healthy lifestyle that involves exercise.”
When are practices?
Marc said, “Usually MWF is at the Liberty Street Field, but now we have games most of the time and not much time to practice.”
Have you ever coached anything else other than softball?
Marc said, “I don’t think so. I guess that’s because I got into coaching when my daughters started to play.”
How is your team doing this year?
Marc said, “We’re doing pretty well. Lots of games get stopped early due to the time and there’s a runs per inning limit so it’s hard to tell who “won” sometimes. But we’ve been in almost all the games.”
Are there any other coaches and what are their names?
Marc said, “Yes, we have some other people who help out. Some just in practice and some in games, too. Josh Hurlburt and Sarah Rougier help at games.”
Did you ever stop coaching at one point?
Marc said, “Yes, when I didn’t have kids playing.”
