This is a road map on how we can talk about what and why we are all working together and what we can, collectively, build together with our community. The task is not to memorize the words, but to weave in this mission and these values into our attitude while we are together and beyond. After all, our attitude is what people will feel and remember most. How we put these values and our mission into our relationships with Matchwood Brewing Company’s will be the most powerful message of all. Download this story here.
Matchwood Brewing Company is Sandpoint’s neighborhood brewery where personal connections foster positive community change through the power of dialogue and laughter — one delicious handcrafted beer at a time.
In the early 1900’s, Matchwood, a small railroad siding and community located just North of Sandpoint, was home to beautiful old growth Western White Pine forest. Timber barons fell and transported by rail America’s straightest grain wood to create high quality, handcrafted wooden matches. These matches brought warmth, light and fire to our communities.
The community of Matchwood and area was built by hardworking sawyers, loggers, millwrights, railroad engineers, carpenters, farmers, ranchers and their families. The historic granary district where we chose to build Matchwood Brewing Company, was defined by people who worked hard and people who worked with their hands. In all we do, we honor traditional work skills and the indomitable work ethic of people whose shoulders and sacrifices we now stand upon today. Our vision for the future is to build upon that work ethic, provide a place for rest from a hard day’s work and a launching pad for innovative ideas to fuel the next generation of entrepreneurs.
We’re good people. We care about each other. We enjoy serving others. We take pride in superior hospitality. We understand that even if we can’t make a guest happy, we can always make them feel welcome and appreciated. We take care of each other as a team and we delight in finding ways to proactively anticipate a guest’s needs before they even think to ask. We understand that the world is becoming increasingly divisive and we choose to use our time together to find shared experiences that make our neighborhood, our town and maybe our world a bit closer.
Our brewing team made up of Kennden Culp (Head of Production) & Josh Francis (Head Brewer), have devoted much of their lives to studying the history and every detail that goes into the tradition of craft brewing – while keeping an ever-present eye on newest advances in the craft brewing industry. As such, we are proud to specialize in a diverse flight of English, German and American Ales and Lagers handcrafted with time-honored European brewing techniques that are thoughtfully coupled with pioneering hop blends and innovative brewing technology.
We take pride in offering high quality handmade craft beers for every palette and aim to make our craft beers as approachable and welcoming as our space. Our proprietary ingredients include premium hops sourced from around the globe based on their flavor profiles, a proprietary fermentation process, regionally-grown and roasted malt, wheat and barley. Our approach to brewing is based on a simple premise: this process is a relationship between the brewer and the community. Our aim is to provide a carefully curated lineup of the highest quality craft beer possible and are open to adapting recipes.
Warm. Welcome. Clean. Kind. Friendly. Fun. Approachable. Neighborly. Historic. Innovative. These signature characteristics define how we treat each other and our guests. These words define our beer, our glasses, our serving surfaces, our personal hygiene, our food, our service, our community room, our patio and our relationships with our guests.
While major renovations have ensured a comfortable environment and state of the art brewing facility — the history and community surrounding our location drive the look and feel of our brewery. Our finishes are made of repurposed materials extracted from the building and historic grain elevator. Carefully designed and handmade furniture by local artisans will accompany a handcrafted bar made of a 130 year old Western White Pine fell on Kennden and Andrea’s family property to honor our story.
Good people, doing good things. Our community grows stronger when individuals regularly and persistently do simple things together that give them a chance engage, connect and build trust. In addition to our taproom, patio and mezzanine seating, we are proud to feature a community room to bring together people with diverse experiences and backgrounds to inspire positive community change. Our community room serves as a platform for organizations and businesses to hold meetings, workshops, or presentations. Events and private space use can be reserved on our website using the online form.
We want our guests to have freedom to roam and invite them to our brewery forward, counter-service eatery to enjoy the laid back warmth of a neighborhood food that is simple, substantial, and approachable.
