Pencil Value Scale

The secret is in the layers!

Create a value scale by drawing a rectangle and dividing it into 4 squares. Start by laying down value with your pencil in the darkest square. Don't press hard right away! Instead, build up the layers of graphite. it will produce a darker, more even value.

Colored Pencil Mixing

Mix colors without any paint!

Use your primary colors to create the secondary colors with your pencils. Lightly layer two primary colors together until you start to see the secondary color coming through. Build up layers to blend the two colors together.

Oil Pastel - Tints & Shades

Tint = add white

Shade = add black

Oil Pastel - Color Mixing

Layer colors that are near each other on the color wheel together. Change your pressure and keep adding layers to blend the colors together.

Oil Pastel - Sgraffito

Create a layer of color on your paper. Then gently draw overtop of it with a darker color. This technique works best when you use gentle layers to apply each color.

Then, use your pencil to gently draw designs on the oil pastel layers. Your designs should reveal the layer of color underneath! This is a great technique for adding textures like fur or scales to a drawing.

Sharpie Marker - Cross-Hatching

Create a rectangle to use as a value scale. Then add layers of perpendicular lines to create dark, medium and light values. Be cautions when adding more lines, you can't erase sharpie!

Marker - Pointillism

Choose a simple object and draw it in your sketchbook. Select a variety of marker colors that you will use to fill in the object. Pointillism is created by using tiny dots of color very close to each other.
