The Global Citizenship Requirement for the Global Certificate will help students connect activities in their school with the global community. Students must actively participate in four of the globally based programs offered at MHS. To guarantee active participation, students will need to submit a reflection showing their involvement with the activity; this shows they were more than just a name on the roster and have improved their understanding and global perspective. The student reflection can be submitted to their Global Team Mentor for review.
Con Juntos Latinos is the Spanish Club at MHS. Members will learn about Spanish-speaking cultures through guest speakers, foreign films and other social and learning activities.
Members of German Club get to learn more about German culture and its history. Students will celebrate German traditions, discuss German films and have the opportunity to host German students in a two week exchange program.
International Club helps welcome foreign exchange students get to know our school community. Members will learn about each other's experiences, learn about the home countries of our exchange students, and take field trips to international events such as the Folk Fair in downtown Milwaukee.
Participate in the International Exchange Program by hosting an exchange student from another country or study abroad yourself. In the past few years, Mukwonago students have studied for a full year in China and Italy. For those students interested, see Global Team Member and AFS Area Coordinator, Mrs. Rozman
Key Club is a student run, community service organization. Key Club works to improve their community at home and internationally through programs such as the UNICEF Eliminate project, Simple Hope Packathon for communities in Tanzania and other projects created and organized by students.
Students work together in the club addressing assigned global issues that are of concern to the United Nations and countries around the world. Students are then assigned a country and research that country's perspective related to the problem and offer a solution in a live simulation with other students at competitions representing various countries around the world. Interested students should contact Mrs. Merschdorf for more information.
Attend a special event hosted by the Global Education Team. Events may include guest speakers on various international topics.
Travel with other MHS students and staff on an educational tour through Spain or Germany
Every year, Mukwonago High School sends two students to the World Affairs Seminar at Carroll University in Waukesha. These two students attend on a scholarship provided by the Rotary Club and Kiwanis club and have the opportunity to hear from speakers and work in groups with students from both around the country and the world to discuss global issues.
Are you traveling and would like to make your experience count? There is no guarantee your experience will be accepted. After all, there are many international travel opportunities that do not truly help us gain a better understanding of the world (especially all inclusive resorts). However world travel does provide experiences that are unique from anything else. If you are planning on such a trip or will be travelling with a group from MHS or other organization, keep a travel journal to document your experiences and thoughts.
You should also open the word document to the right and complete a travel reflection form, then turn it in to your global mentor via google classroom.
Join Global Scholar students and other clubs for an interactive presentation on a brief history of South Africa and the legacy of Apartheid. Participants will learn about important historical events in South Africa, the impact they have on current issues within South Africa and cultural characteristics of the very diverse country. Nhlanhla Mpofu will be leading the presentation. Nhlanhla is a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Fellow for Zulu language in African Studies Department at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
A document pertaining to the specific event will be provided and should be used before, during and after the presentation, then turned in to your mentor. Events similar to this one can be found under the Events tab at the top of the website.
There are multiple clubs to participate in that can fulfill the Global Scholars requirement for citizenship. They are all geared towards gaining additional exposure and understanding of global issues and other perspectives. The document on the left is a reflection sheet and rubric that can be used as evidence to show an increase in global understanding.
For student club involvement, complete the document on the left, reflect and document your experiences in the club, and turn it into your club advisor. The club advisor will then turn your reflection into your global mentor.
