Finding an Internship

TEN Simple steps to get an academic internship

1. Let your faculty Academic Internship Mentor (AIM) and your Academic Advisor know you're interested in doing your internship in the upcoming semester. He/She will want to know, and may have some good ideas/tips for you (See Faculty AIM list, below)
2. Talk to a career specialist in the Career Center to help you with your resume, cover letter, search strategy, interview tips, and possible leads.
3. Apply by sending your resume, along with a cover letter, to any interesting opportunities that you find.
4. Continue your research and keep applying until you get a firm offer from an internship that you want.
5. Keep a log of every application, including name of company, date of application and date of response. You'll be applying to different places, and it's important to keep them straight! Stick with it--sometimes it takes a lot of tries to get that great internship!
6. When invited go to the interview (in person, phone, Skype, etc) make sure you have good background information about the organization and are prepared to discuss it. Dress appropriately and show up early.
7. Once you get a firm offer, close the loop with your faculty AIM and bring him/her up to speed on your progress.
8. If everything still looks good, accept the internship and immediately report your internship using Jobs4Saints (MU Career Data base--use link, below)
9. IMPORTANT:Be absolutely certain the name, email and phone number of your supervisor is correct in Jobs4Saints (we will contact your supervisor using the email you give in Jobs4Saints, and if your supervisor's email is wrong, approval of your internship will come to a sudden stop, and that might prevent approval in time for the coming semester)
10. 10. After 3 days, follow-up with your internship supervisor and your faculty AIM to be sure both received the Jobs4Saints email (that asks them to approve your internship).

Once you complete the TEN Steps, and your internship supervisor, faculty, and dean have approved your internship, you will be registered by your dean--You cannot register yourself using MARYNET!
