Artist Statement
My portraits focus on women who currently work in or have worked in the sex industry, as either strippers or escorts. My intention in these oil paintings is to describe a sense of strength, beauty, and empowerment, while bringing attention to societal stigmas targeted against women and female sexuality. Sex workers face discrimination and violence, with little protection or support from their gender and communities. While developing the first portrait of the set, I realized that each of these women had also lived through some form of sexual assault or abuse yet has also achieved educational and career goals.

"I started this series in April of 2020 post lockdown due to the global pandemic. In 2016 I created a series of virus sculptures for an exhibition at the Ayala Museum in the Philippines. After realizing the connection to what is going on today, a patron commissioned me to recreate a 2020 version of the virus. Hence, a series of 10 updated versions came to light. Making these in my studio in Arlington during the early stages of lockdown helped keep me busy during these uncertain times and served as an outlet to ease my anxiety. Now, these pieces are glazed and loaded in a wood fire kiln and await the final stages of the ceramic process, the test of the fire".

Hadrian used stoneware clay and potter’s wheel to create repetitive forms that come together to resemble an image of the virus. The pieces were glazed and loaded into wood fire kiln which still awaits a trial by fire.

"Spring 2020 has held many challenges over the semester including doing ceramics online. I worked on constructing six paper mugs with the materials I had at home. I decided to make my mugs represent the war we are fighting globally against the coronavirus pandemic. I planned out the theme for each mug and then worked to acquire the materials I had at home already. I had some structural issues with materials that I had to work around such as, weak loose-leaf paper, super glue changing colors of paper, and succoring the structure of the mugs with staples. Each mug has a unique perspective of what we all are going through currently. They are meant to resonate with the audience differently and personally just like the pandemic has affected all of us differently."

My work includes drawings, paintings, installation, and mixed media. A personal layering of time, history of location, the power of intention, and the force and strength of nature are all things I am thinking about currently in my work. I often begin with an intuitive response to and an interpretation of my experiences and the work unfolds as a more focused expression revealed through the process.
My work includes drawings, paintings, installation, and mixed media. A personal layering of time, history of location, the power of intention, and the force and strength of nature are all things I am thinking about currently in my work. I often begin with an intuitive response to and an interpretation of my experiences and the work unfolds as a more focused expression revealed through the process.
Wide and blurry brush strokes cover abstracted environments of deconstruction and memory of place. In some work, thin lines pull weighted and grounded masses and attempt to shift a situation. They represent the strength and the effect of many. This abstracted narrative derives from deeper thoughts of weightlessness, control, fear, safety and holding back/letting go. I am working with process and sensation to suggest both an elegance and a rawness.

The world we perceive is a fragment of one moment in time, place, and state of mind. The world shifts constantly, and what we see at a single point in time, quickly dissipates. The Fragmented View series is a representation of this phenomenon. The collages are built from segments of smaller collages that are then neatly arranged to present an organized view of the subject. My objective in organizing the artwork in this deliberate way is to capture the human struggle of trying to control a constantly shifting world while being limited to see only a small fraction of a bigger universe.

Following that, Jaz cut out the shapes for each individual mini collage, assemble them, and then glue each shape in its place to represent an aspect of the subject of the bigger collage. Finally, Jaz organizes the mini collages into a single big piece and add ink details to create texture. Each piece takes Jaz about 3-4 weeks to complete.

Jaz felt that her project was very well received at the reception as well as during the homecoming art sale. She had the opportunity to met many wonderful artists at the event and connected with the community, at the same time learning about other opportunities to showcase her artwork

Since I was young, because my mother is from Japan, I have had the opportunity to visit the country many times. One trip specifically I had volunteered for earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear fallout relief efforts one year after the Tohoku, Fukushima disaster in 2011. During this experience, I was able to meet many good people and was able to see how the environment goes through changes after a natural disaster. I started to think about radiation, flooding, destruction, shifting of tectonic plates and that impact on the earth and the communities affected and how I could be of service to them.

On our campus we have a statue of the Sacred Heart of Mary which I have taken my photos of and drawn in charcoal. Ave Maria can be seen as a motherly figure, a provider, like our mother earth. The title of my series, Sei to Shi, is a phrase in Japanese meaning life and death. Even though natural disasters can devastate a community, compassion for others allows us to strengthen our communities.

Sei to Shi is one of the biggest pieces Grant has ever worked on. To prepare for the magnitude of his artwork, Grant focused on media outlets and current photographies as references. With the help of Fine Arts Professor Sarah Hardesty, Grant was able to prep scale for his set up.

Overall, Grant's work has been very successful, but one of his main challenges was framing the pieces. Due to this, his work was exposed to many outside factors that tempered with the Artwork. From this, Grant has learned how to frame better, his photography skills have increased, and is not intimidated in creating bigger pieces of art.
