The Fine Arts

The Department of Fine Arts offers courses in diverse media that focus on creating, studying, and evaluating works of art. Our programs of study prepare students for a multitude of professional careers involving the arts and art education, and offer a variety of studio courses ranging from design, drawing, painting, printmaking, and ceramics.

Programs of Study in the Arts

Bachelor of Arts

There are two degrees offered in the Fine Arts that prepare students for different career tracks as either professional artists or as art educators. Both majors offer an array of studio art courses where students build professional portfolios, which is evaluated and juried for a public group exhibition on campus. There are also 2 separate professional tracks for Fine Arts majors, and multiple minors at Marymount University. Below are descriptions of these numerous programs offered through the Department of Fine Arts.

Bachelor of Art in Art

Fine Arts majors focus on developing artistic skills in an assortment of different media including drawing, print-making, painting, and ceramics, and create a professional portfolio of work that demonstrates their breadth of talent. Students also supplement artistic skill with art history courses, cultivating opportunities to analyze works of art in greater detail. These combined skills prepare students to pursue a multitude of careers as professional artists and designers.

Bachelor of Art in Art Education (K-12 Licensure)

This program combines curriculum from studio art, psychology, and education to prepare students for a career in teaching art for all grade levels in the state of Virginia. Students develop important skills for creating works of art from a range of studio courses, and combine those skills with contemporary practices in teaching to prepare for a fulfilling career in fostering the next generation of artists.

The Department of Fine Arts has for 4 exciting minors for students who are interested in studying the Fine Arts, but choose majors outside of the fine arts discipline.

Study abroad with Fine Arts

The Department of Fine Arts continuously offers Study Abroad experiences hosted in a variety of art history and studio art courses, and are available to all Marymount students regardless of major. These opportunities have included educational partnerships with organizations in Brussels, Amsterdam, and Rome, and they offer students an international perspective on how the fine arts have continuously impacted our society throughout history and the present.

Get Involved

There are many ways to engage with the fine arts at Marymount through course offerings, campus and community events. Our Activities consist of gallery exhibitions and receptions, public art projects, student art club, study abroad programs, and a variety of volunteer projects benefiting community partners.
