Thesis or Design Research Project I
Course focuses on the exploration of a significant question or challenging issue in interior design. Through readings and field studies, students formulate and carry out an individual investigation under faculty supervision and critique. Findings are presented in a written or graphic document and evidence-based design project.
Students who do not fulfill all of the course requirements and are not eligible for an Incomplete will receive an IP grade. Students with an IP must register for ID 698C and pay a registration fee. The continuation carries no credit.
Prerequisite: a grade of B- or better in ID 606. (3)
Significant Semester Deadlines
In ID-698, two design critiques are held during class time:
Advisory Committee Selection occurs in week 5 of the semester.
Critique 1 occurs in week 8 of the semester.
Critique 2 occurs in week 14 of the semester.
Deliverables
The following deliverables will be completed during the semester:
Part 1 of the book -- Research and Programmatic deliverables
Thesis book (chapter 1–4)
Digital Slide Presentations (weeks 8 and 14)
Deadlines for these deliverables will be announced at the beginning of the semester on the course syllabus.

Additional guidance for project development will be provided in the course syllabus and via Canvas.
Week 8
Critique 1
The purpose of this meetings is to provide written guidance and direction to the student prior to selection of the thesis committee.

Week 10
Advisory Committee Selesction
The Thesis Advisory Committee is comprised of the one Committee Chair and two Content Advisors. During ID 697 or ID 698, students identify members of his or her Advisory Committee. The Thesis Advisory Committee should have a minimum of three advisors, each with a different role in his/her advisory capacity. Read more about the Advisory Committee here.
Week 14
Critique 2
The purpose of this meetings is to provide written guidance and direction to the student prior to the completion of the term. This meeting ensures the student is prepared to move forward to ID 699. The meetings also develop consensus among the advisors on an appropriate work plan for ID 699.
The student is expected to attend the critiques even if his or her advisors cannot attend. Students are responsible for meeting with advisors that are unable to attend a scheduled critique.
